Affinity Designer Pixel Persona Tools Have No Select Arrow

In OSX Catalina using Affinity Designer 1.8.4, I cannot get the three erase brushes - only erase brush tool - because the little arrow for the other brushes is not there.

Furthermore, the erase brush tool doesn't make the pixels transparent; it erases an area leaving white and white is never erased.

The paint brush tool also doesn't have a selection arrow.

Please advise.

In Designer the Pixel persona is a rudimentary pixel editing environment, it does not have the same feature set as Affinity Photo you can see this by the reduced icon set for the tools bar View > Customise Tools… 

These are the only tools available under Affinity Designer tools

      When looking at how-to videos, I carelessly didn't observe that some of them referred to Affinity Photo.
