File linking/authorisations/Removing pdf background

Recommended Posts

Aliya Little Flower bee Arabic 6k square.afdesignI create personalised designs using Arabic. Since Affinity does not support Arabic natively I either use pre-prepared .svg curves to represent arabic letters or more usually I use an Arabic font in Pages to write the name in the correct colour, export to .pdf, then place within my design. Then I would double click on the placed file and a new tab would appear for that file, which I could then go to and delete the background from so only my original Arabic text remained.

However I have just started using Designer on a new laptop and can't seem to do this any more, I'm not sure if this is something to do with the file linking settings. After I place my pdf file within my document I can only crop it but I can't remove the background so the Arabic text is sitting on a rectangle chunk taken out of the original design.

What am I doing wrong?

After placing your PDF, does it show as an Embedded Document on the Layers panel? Also if you have the PDF/object selected, on the Context toolbar does it have an option to Edit Document? If not can you provide a screenshot?

Thanks for the helpful questions Lee. The PDF showed as a 'linked document' not an 'embedded document' on the layers panel. There was an option to 'replace document' but I didn't see an 'edit document' button. However I then replaced the pdf with another one just to test it out and the new document then showed as an 'embedded document' and there WAS an edit document button. So then when I clicked that it opened the new tab just like it always used to so I could delete the white background in the pdf.

Would you please tell me what I did wrong to mess this up? Sounds like I want 'embedded' not 'linked' always for this design scenario?

I also found a workaround before I got your response - which is to just open the pdf file separately inside Affinity and I can then edit it and just copy and paste the Arabic text box into the design. I guess it's just a way of doing the same thing but in a different order?
