pomme27
I've been using Affinity Designer for about six weeks now, on a 2013 iMac running OS X Yosemite. On about five occasions when I am editing a document in Affinity Designer, my iMac shuts itself off with no warning. It's as if someone pulled out the electrical plug. I do not know if Affinity Designer is the cause, but I do know that I have not had this problem in the nearly three years that I have owned the iMac. And the iMac never shuts itself down when I am using other software. It only happens with Affinity Designer. Anyone else having this problem? Any ideas? pomme27
Happened two more times this afternoon. At first I thought it was a temperature problem, but iStat Menu shows my CPU and operating temperatures are ok. I noticed on both occasions this afternoon that the shut down happened the instant that I zoomed in on objects in Affinity Designer ... Staff MattP Posted July 31, 2015 Staff Share Posted July 31, 2015 Hi pomme27, That sounds extremely odd... We've obviously got lots of different configurations of Macs from 2008 right up to a few days old and we've never had that - and I've not heard of anyone reporting it before either... Can I suggest first that you try a PRAM reset? It's the only thing I've ever had to do to my Mac in years to sort out a random issue - and it did sort that one out :) Thanks, Matt
DonatoF
Hi Pomme27 - If Matt's suggestion doesn't help, I would suggest running an extended memory test, symptoms like that could be related to a bad RAM module. Not sure about your iMac, but try starting up and press and hold the "D" key, that should bring up built-in hardware diagnostics including memory testing. If it does, run the extended test. Edit: they appeared to have changed from Apple Hardware Test (AHT) to Apple Diagnostics (AD) sometime in 2013, I know the AHT had the extended memory testing, not sure about AD. Both should start the same way, holding the "d" key.
pomme27
I ran the Apple Hardware Diagnostic, and it identified a memory error. So it appears to be a coincidence that my iMac shuts down only when using Affinity Designer. Fortunately, the machine is under warranty. Apple is going to replace the memory chips and logic board this coming week. Fingers crossed ... Paul Bravery
