How can I use "Alternates" and "Variants" in a Character Style?

Hello Everyone

Could anyone help me understand the function of "Alternates" and "Variants" in the Character Style or point me to a Tutorial on how to use? I don't get its purpose yet and I can't find anything useful on the Internet.
