exporting with transparency

I am just trying affinity photo for the first time. I selected an image using the brush tool. Added a mask. It shows a transparent background. I go to export the png without a background, but it always does it with a black background. What am I doinf wrong?

Welcome to the forums and my sincerest apologies for the delayed response here.

There may be a few reasons for this, so I'm going to need some further information.

Could you please provide a screenshot of your Affinity document, showing the full canvas and the Layer Studio?

Then, open the Export window and select PNG, then click 'More' at the bottom. Could you please provide a screenshot of your settings here also?
