.afdesign vs .afpub file sizes

Recommended Posts

Is this the way things are supposed to be? I have the latest version (1.82.630) of the 3 Affinity apps. I started off in Designer, created a 7.5x9.5 (300 dpi) page and placed 5 little JPG files (each a max 1200 pixels wide with a file size of about 200k) and 3 frame text objects on it. I exported an image from it and then saved the .afdesign file. I looked at that file’s size and saw that it was about 6 MB! Rasterizing the images into pixel layers, of course, made the file larger (11 mb).

Just for grins I tried similar things in Xara (1.2 MB), Corel Draw (11 mb) and MS Publisher (1.2 MB). I held off on Affinity Publisher till last figuring it would be similar to the .afdesign result. It turned out that the .afpub file was only 800k in size.

Why was the .afdesign file so big even when images were placed? Why the difference between .afdesign and .afpub?

Designer Embeds a complete copy of the Placed file into the .afdesign file, as it is designed to do.

Publisher offers the ability to Link a file (which is the default choice), which only places a reference (pointer) to the Placed file in the .afpub file. That takes less space.

Thanks for the explanation. I kinda wish there was an option to have them come in linked to Designer and have them converted when one does anything more elaborate than just pushing them around on a page.

Fortunately with Publisher and its Designer and Photo personas I have what I need.
