Ma3rk Posted January 25, 2020 Posted January 25, 2020 With my 3D work, I'll often save out a test render in PNG. The scene is being lit with an HDR so the rendered image is essentially a composite where the actual geometry would matte the background HDR & correct color space. If I was to open this in Photoshop (which I don't have on this system), a plug-in called SuperPNG I believe would intercede & ask what I wished to do with the transparency info. I could clear the BG info make transparency or, leave the BG alone & create a new alpha. Can't recall how PShop handled PNGs natively; differently but it didn't default to clearing to transparent & could still create an alpha. With AP, I can't find any such option & it always clears the BG imagery & creates transparency. Is there a way with AP to do this? Quote
firstdefence Posted January 25, 2020 Posted January 25, 2020 For reference: https://www.fnordware.com/superpng/ SuperPNG requires holding down Shift when opening a PNG file, else PS opens the PNG file. This is the window PS shows when opening a PNG using the Shift key. Ma3rk Posted January 25, 2020 Author Posted January 25, 2020 Excellent. Thanks. Thought AP might have had this natively. Quote
Ma3rk Posted January 25, 2020 Author Posted January 25, 2020 Hmmm. Not able to get SuperPNG to invoke. I've put the SuperPNG.8bi file into the default folder listed in the Preferences. Holding the Shift key only ends up selecting multiple files. Not seeing options for png in the file requestor list as I would with PS, just .png. What have I misssed? Quote

Ma3rk Posted January 27, 2020 Author Posted January 27, 2020 Well, harumph! Thought the first reply was a solution but guess more of a nod to this would be nice to have. Quote
firstdefence Posted January 27, 2020 Posted January 27, 2020 Apologises if I wasn't clear. The SuperPNG is technically a plugin but is actually more like an PS extension/script which means it doesn't show in the Filters dropdown, what it does is it adds functionality to the PS open command, it's more of an actionable script that can be activated using a shortcut key and a PNG file, consequently this plugin will never show in Affinity because Affinity Photo doesn't understand what it actually is. With regard to the 3D work, which 3D app are you using? maybe we can get an alpha channel to export with the PNG or as a side file.
