Yoshinatsu Ryou
I apologize for the ignorance, but I think Photo's crop tool is missing some crucial features, or I'm missing them. I recently switched to Affinity Photo, but for the life of me, the crop tool doesn't seem to snap to guides, or center points. It also can't symmetrically expand and shrink like other photo editors do, unless there's some option I'm not aware of. Is there a way to do those functions on the current version? Thank you very much for any assistance!
GarryP
Welcome to the forums. You can snap the Crop to Guides by setting Snap to Guides in the Snapping pop-up. (However, I can’t get it to snap to the image centres either for some reason that someone might be able to explain.) You can also set the Mode to “Original Ratio” in the Crop Context Toolbar to make it easier to keep the original shape.
Yoshinatsu Ryou
Thank you for the reply Garry! I was mostly referring to center snapping. Even with the "snap to guides" option, the crop box doesn't snap to a central guide, only to a side guide. I love mostly everything about Affinity Photo, but since I crop pictures all the time, this is making my life quite more difficult compared to other programs, because now I have to "manually" crop everything and trust my own eyes, instead of doing it automatically and crop with computed precision. GarryP
You’re welcome. I’m not entirely sure what you mean by “center snapping” or “snap to a central guide”. Photo can, apparently, snap to the mid points of a Spread but I’m not sure what a ‘spread’ means in Photo - as opposed to, for example, a spread in Publisher - so I don’t know how this is supposed to work. If you have a specific need then, if you explain all of the steps in enough detail, someone may be able to help further. Or, if it’s not just you who has that need, then it may become a feature request for a future release (you never know).
Yoshinatsu Ryou
I have made video to demonstrate what Photo doesn't do. First is the "center snapping", as I called it: Second is the symmetrical expansion and reduction of the crop tool. I'm using the open-source tool Krita to showcase this:
GarryP
Ah, I see what you mean now. Thanks for the videos, they make it much clearer. I would agree that this functionality would be good to add. As for the snapping to the centres of the layer, we have this when dragging layers so why not also have it when dragging the crop box? As for the symmetrical resizing, we have this when resizing layers via the Shift/Ctrl modifiers so why not when we are resizing the crop box too? Both sound like very reasonable requests to me.
