I need to go back to an earlier version, which I'll do soon, but I ran into another weird problem. I have a specific footnote that when I apply Italics, is capitalized as well. So I looked at the Text Style and found: Q Footnote text + Case Sensitive Forms: On; Capital Spacing: On; Historical Forms: On; Historic Ligatures: On However, clicking on the footnote and then on the Q Footnote style doesn't change anything. Shouldn't it apply that style? I did figure out that if I click on that T with an arrow wrapping around it icon next to the text style, that it does apply the style to the footnote. I have no idea how those extra styles got applied, or why they cause Italics to be capitalized. What is Case sensitive forms supposed to do?

What is v2.2.1 (Built 2053) that was just released? -
Walt, as I mentioned, I wasn't able to get it back to just Footnote text. That seems like another bug, unless there is something that makes sense that would prevent me from selecting a footnote and setting it back to the Footnote style. Thanks for pointing out how to see the modifications. The only modifications are + Historical Forms; Historic Ligatures: On. Another odd thing I noticed is that when I go to the Notes Panel, under Footnotes, when I select Document-Wide everything is grayed out. If I select Custom then I can make changes. Is that how it's supposed to be?

So my footnote text doesn't change anything in the Flow settings, but inherits from my Body text, which has 'Prevent widowed last lines' checked. Oddly, however, when I am looking at my Body text I see the 'Prevent widowed last lines' checked in the Paragraph box, but when I click into Footnote text, I don't see it checked. It seems like that's a bug, no? I have screenshots showing the settings for each styles, and then what I see when clicking into the text. Another strange thing is that it has a + after the footnote style when clicking into the text, which I assume means it's modified, however, even if I select the text and pick the footnote style, it still shows the +. Obviously if it's modified, it could be the difference in flow settings, but I have no way to know that do I? Is there a way to list the modifications to the style?

I was just going back to change a footnote based on some new info I came across, and it appears to be one of the pages where all the footnotes are invisible. So I've added a video of that bug as well. I removed one sentence which made the footnotes reappear, and then in the video I paste the sentence back which makes them all disappear. I'd like to ask that Insert Note (in the Notes panel) and Insert Marker (in the Index panel) icons get differentiated. I am frequently switching back and forth between the Notes and Index panels, and I reflexively hit the Insert button even if I'm in the wrong panel, since they are the same icon and essentially in the same place. If you wanted, you could even have the icon be different for Footnotes, Sidenotes, and Endnotes. I'm only using Footnotes right now, but I would imagine if someone was using more than one of them, even in different documents, it might also be confusing.

I just wanted to add another reason for this feature – consistency checking. It would be very useful to be able to search for a word, see the matching footnotes, and check for consistency. For example, when quoting from a source, am I formatting my quotes in the same way? Also, if I have an explanatory note about a person mentioned in the book, I may have written a similar note later in the book if the person shows up again. Being able to search notes, and see the matches, would be very helpful for preventing this.

Here's another one, where it looks okay, but when I drag in an image, it messes everything up. It's similar to the above example where the footnote jumps up from the bottom even though it should stay there. In this case there is no place the image can be where the footnote displays properly. Even with the image at the top of the page, the footnote is still slightly up from the bottom of the page. Screen Recording 2023-09-13 at 07.44.24 PM.mp4

I'm attaching a video which shows me repositioning an image, and the footnote immediately clings to the bottom of the image, even though the text below the image initially should be flowing around the image, and the footnote should remain at the bottom of the page. Sure, but some of the editing needs to be done in place, as footnotes move between pages if they change length sometimes, and in the end I need to edit them in place. Having them in the left column and also seeing them in the layout would be very useful for reviewing footnotes and making sure everything is correct.

Yes, converting to endnotes had occurred to me, but that would mess up the layout of the book. It would be useful for seeing all the notes for reviewing, but it wouldn't let me see them and the layout at the same time. Seeing the layout at the same time would insure that the notes I change don't mess up the layout by moving to another page, etc. Sometimes that doesn't matter, but sometimes it messes things up. I am also not sure what would happen if I did that, as I re-number my notes every chapter. I do this by disconnecting the text between chapters, and renumbering per Story. If I switched to Endnotes, wouldn't that re-number all of my notes?

I'd love to be able to view a list of all my Notes in the static left column just like I can for Indexes, and have a quick way to search through Notes and show all the matching Notes. This would be very useful for reviewing Notes, making sure multiple notes don't cover the same thing, etc. Like an Index I'd like to be able to click on a Note, and have it jump to the page it's on so I can see it in context. It would also be useful to be able to double-click on the note marker and if the Notes column is showing, have it jump to that note in the list as well.

If I have a document and I am flowing pages with footnotes, if I try to select a flow line and then delete it, it's very difficult to do so if where the line connects (the lower right side of the text box) is adjacent to footnotes instead of the main text. You can select it the first time, but when you try to click it a second time (which should delete the flow) it doesn't usually work. In the book I'm working on I run into this a lot, as there are a lot of footnotes, and when I start a new chapter I always disconnect the flow, so that the Stories map to the chapters (which allows me to start renumbering footnotes for each chapter).

Thank you. Indeed there was an override set to 14pt. I have no idea how that got set. Setting it to auto fixed it. Now my question is what happens if I set that to Auto in my style settings. It will change the layout of my whole book. Not looking forward to fixing all the problems that would cause, but I guess I'm wasting a lot of space if I leave it.

Oddly, I'm also seeing a weird issue with leading, but in Publisher 2.2 Beta (1931). In my case changing the leading doesn't do anything. I have a chapter where the body text is normally 12pt, and I changed a few paragraphs to 9pt, but there is way too much space between the lines (as if leading remained at 12pt). However, leading says 9pt, but whatever number I set it to, it doesn't change. Same with the 12pt text, I can't change the leading. I know this isn't the same exact issue, but in case there is a connection, I've posted it here as well.

I'd really like to be able to click on the number in a footnote, and jump to the number in the main text. It's easy when you're in the text to see the number and know where to find the footnote, but sometimes you want to do the reverse, and it's not as easy. It would be great if you could jump from the footnote to it's position in the text, so the cursor would move there, or perhaps when editing a footnote, the original text would be highlighted. Some way to easily find where the footnote is in the original text.
