  1. I wanted to add noise to an image to get that old world feel about it.  I had the original background layer duplicated and used the Filter/Noise/Add Noise. Sure enough it seemed to work fine, however as soon as I hit the "Apply" the effect disappeared.  I tried several ways, including ticking and unticking the "Monochromatic" box,  ticking and unticking the "Gaussian" and "Uniform" options, but nothing worked.

I have now solved my immediate predicament by using the New Live Filter Layer - Add Noise.  However I wonder about two things (1) why does the filter not work ...........   (2) Why bother having the Filter/ Noise/ Add Noise, etc, etc, when the much more useful New Live Filter Layer is available??

  2. Today we were at our regular tutoring session about Affinity Photo.   We were offered update to 1.6.2 and duly updated.  I came home and expected the

same to happen on my home PC  - but no,  it seems happy with version 1.6.1.93.   I then went  to Help>Welcome, etc, etc  but no there is no clear option.  Usually a program has a Help> Update option

but not Affinity Photo.  Maybe there is another way that I am missing??  :(

  3. Thanks for the responses.  We have been away so I have just seen them.

Our group has some good photographers who have had photos in our National Exhibition and even recognition in International competition.  So we can readily find suitable images.

Nevertheless a couple of our participants struggle a bit and it would be easier for them if we could use the actual demo images as used in the videos.  Most training videos offer these.

Is it a copyright issue perhaps?

THank you all for your response.

My ultimate goal was to use Lightroom as an image editor and use Affinity for everything else. that seems impossible so I will continue to process my files in Lightroom and use Affinity for more artistic reason. I also understand that the develop persona is useless unless it is  the only software at hand.

    Greetings Mlap

I, and eight others, are currently transitioning from Photoshop Elements to Affinity.   Two of us, me included, use Lightroom as well.  What I am doing as part of the transition, is to right-click in Lightroom and choose to edit the image either in Affinity or Elements (having previously identified my preferences).  This is great, as it helps me in my journey.  I am being brief here, but if I can contribute more then please respond a bit more with your concerns.  What you want to do is certainly achieveable!

  5. We are a group of eight/nine retired people who meet together twice a week to learn Affinity Photo, most frequently by using the videos as a base.   Often this works okay because we use low resolution copies of the images on the videos.  However, when we do the procedure known on one video as "Cutting Out", the resolution of the two images in the composite are so low that we cannot get a good result.  We cannot fully utilise the sophistication of the tutoring in the video.  As we go further down the track we will undoubtedly find the same with other images.

My question is - would Serif be willing to make the images used in the videos available on their platform for people, such as ourselves, to use in the learning process?

  6. Hi toltec,  I have discovered the problem.  When I have used the selection brush tool it has been on subtract.  Not being used to Affinity I find that it is hard to differentiate the greys which identify whether you have chosen add or subtract.  Now that I know that the darker grey is the choice I start on "add" and it works fine.

I have not found an option to have the background other than grey and suspect that there is not any.  I did find the option to increase the intensity of greys, but did not see much diff!

  7. Coincidentally Ann, we have been researching the same thing for a good friend of ours.  As I understand it, Affinity is somewhat comparable with Photoshop in this regard, but more efficient in its use, probably because it is a younger program.   The processor is the first consideration, I hope we have dissuaded our friend from an i7, which is overkill.  An i5 will be quite sufficient, provided it is quad-core.

jer, above post, suggests start with 16 Gigs of RAM, but then he may be more demanding of what he needs.  In general, I would say 8 Gigs would be fine.  Ideally, find a machine where there is an additional spare slot where you can add 8 more Gig of RAM later if necessary.

Good point about the display.  Ideally an IPS screen, so that no matter from what angle you view the image, it is not affected.  I have only a TN monitor (sob).  However if I look square on to the monitor it is okay and that is what I generally do.

  8. Hi toltec

Here is the image.  I thought the selection brush the most likely but every time it got stuck on the lower red of her costume and refused to add the yellow.  Even the reds it did not like all the hues and threw a "paddy".  I did increase the tolerance by different amounts, but with no benefit.  Your example is an extremely simple selection, because even though there are different colours involved, the hues are constant and the edges very clearly defined.  I did eventually find a way around the problem, by doing a quick mask and then refine edge, but much slower than I am used to.  Still, am confident it is part of the steep learning curve.  I await with "baited breathe"!

    Cheers, Jim

  9. I am very new to Affinity, though I have for six years used Photoshop Elements and add-ons extensively.  I am trying to make a selection of a dancer with a multi-coloured costume, however, none of the tools want to comply.  They seem to be based on selecting similar colours.  The selection will be contiguous, but should come from her (the dancer's) outline,  I increase the tolerance and move from left to right etc, but the tools seem to ignore me, despite having spent an hour or more to do something I could do previously in a couple of minutes.  How should I tackle this please?

Additionally my tools are not showing a menu beside each as it shows in the videos?

  10. I am helping a friend choose the specs for a new desktop PC.  He and I (+ eight others) have started using Affinity.  The Affinity Photo will be the most demanding of his programs.  He does not do multi-tasking.    We are not professionals, just keen amateurs.  My belief is that an i5 quad core processor will be fine for what his needs, together with 8 Gig DDDR 4 RAM and SSD.  He does tend to hold onto his PC for 5/6 years so needs to be somewhat future proofed.

My question is - what would an i7 processor enable him to do that an i5 would not in Affinity Photo ?

  11. Greetings

I am working my way through the video tutorials (though not in sequence) of Affinity Photo.  Unfortunately this morning have come across two which are not loading - these are "Mask Layers" and "Exposure Merging".  I hope this is the place to bring it to the attention of Serif.   Other video clips are working fine and I allowed lots of time in case it is a buffering problem.

  12. Greetings

We have bought 14 copies of the (educational) Photo Affinity Software, but have not received any of the software.  We are a SeniorNet group in Auckland, New Zealand.   I rang the helpline for overseas people (other than UK and USA), but got the message that it was outside of hours, but no mention of what the hours for the helpline are?

We have a class next Thursday and we urgently need the copies for that.  Also our Tutor for Affinity wants to do as much preparation as possible.

I will also try ringing the Accounts Dept in Nottingham, to ensure that I keep this moving.  Do you know what time they are available from?  I want to ring that the earliest possible time.

Neither us, nor Affinity I am sure, want us to have to tell the class participants that we cannot start on that day because we do not yet have the software.

This is my first post, so please be gentle with me.
