  1. The Machine Learning "Object Selection Tool" (or AI masking) in Affinity Photo is a great start, but there is still significant room for improvement. The accuracy of the selections needs to be enhanced considerably; otherwise, users will spend excessive time fixing masks, ultimately losing the benefits they were aiming for.

However, this tool is a promising beginning. I recommend looking at how Capture One approaches AI masking as a benchmark. Capture One’s “people” AI masking feature is particularly impressive, allowing users to simply select what they want to mask from a dropdown list:

    - Body skin (excludes rings, jewelry, fingernails, etc.)
    - Face skin
    - Eyes
    - Eyebrows
    - Lips
    - Hair

These options can be combined or used individually, and the software handles the masking automatically, without the user needing to manually “paint” unless they specifically choose to. The accuracy of Capture One’s masks is exceptionally high, and there is rarely any need for adjustments.

Affinity Photo’s AI masking tool could greatly benefit from incorporating similar functionality and precision.

Resolve has had that for a long time now, it is hardly anything new.  Sometimes it works better than others.

Resolve is primarily video editing software. However, Affinity Photo doesn't have that feature, even though some other products have had it for a long time. Do you see my point? It doesn't help if other products have the features we desire. We need those features in Affinity Photo!

There are threads on the forum with users begging Serif to pledge that they will never introduce AI into the product.

Not everyone sees it as being that important to have - some actively don't want it.

That's perfectly fine. Serif simply needs to clearly communicate their stance on introducing AI-assisted tools to Affinity Photo. With a clear statement from Serif, users can make their own informed decisions.

Personally, I don't want to see generative AI in Affinity products, but I would appreciate AI-assisted features like masking and selections. Additionally, other software like Capture One has recently introduced tools such as Match Look, which allows you to match the style or edits of a reference image with a single click. This is amazing.

  4. Affinity needs some pushing from users to get things done. It is already falling behind significantly in anything related to AI. Products like Capture One, ACDSee, Photoshop, and ON1 Photo RAW have had AI-related tools for a couple of years already. People won't wait indefinitely. Months and years pass by, and nothing happens with Affinity. Capture One costs €350. That is a lot of money, but I am considering spending it if Affinity does not soon release a roadmap outlining when they will introduce AI-assisted tools to their products. If Affinity needs to raise prices a bit, I'm all for it if it speeds up their development.

  5. Hello,

CaptureOne just introduced new improved masking features: "We’ll also introduce the most precise People Masking in the industry yet."
I watched their livestream recording where they demonstrated these new / improved features and I must say I am impressed. At the same time I am sad that Affinity seems to be falling behind...
I used to use C1 as my main tool for years, but then abandoned it because of high price / updating costs. I moved to mainly use Affinity Photo, but I still have old C1, I just haven't updated it for years. It still has features Affinity does not have.
When will Affinity enter to AI era and present tools we have asked for quite a long time? AI assited masking, especially people masking is what we need. And so much more. Look how C1 does this and "copy" it...of course you can always improve :)

Machine learning tools like those for making selections are being investigated, yes. We are not looking at add Generative AI features, but are looking at ways to improve workflows

This is good news. We don't need generative AI tools to Affinity products, but AI/ML-based masking and selections would be great help for us. Just like Capture ONE has and ACDSee has AI masking tools too. Should be possible for Affinity...hopefully soon.

  7. Hello,
Is there any AI features planned for Affinity products?
I would like to see AI masking features like we can see in Capture ONE. This would save a ton of time when doing edits.
When doing for example portrait edits it would be really beneficial to be able to quickly select for example skin of the model for editing.
Detailed masking using brushes is a lot of time wasted. Hoping to get AI tools to help.

Als je de versneller uitschakelt, doet hij het dan goed? Ik kan de Sony ARW bestanden gewoon openen.

If you turn off the accelerator, does it work properly?  I can just open the Sony ARW files.

Turning accelerator off won't help. I can open Sony A7RII, A7RIII, Sony A850 and A99 ARW files, but these A7II ARW's won't open.
    What Sony ARW-files you have?

  9. Hello,

I have used Capture One as my main raw editor, and I have found it's Color Editor / Skin tone "editor" really useful for me as I have quite a lot of photos where is lots of skin area to retouch. Here is how C1 Skin tone editor looks:
    image.png.978d2772f17a5bbb9ec12dfaf80efcdb.png

Basically you select target color range from skin with color picker and then you can use "Uniformity" sliders to even out Hue, Saturation and Lightness differences in skin area (you can mask out skin to be more precise and target only to skin area).
Is there any way to mimic this with AP2?
Capture One upgrade policy and prices are outrageous, so I would like to get rid of using C1 and use only Affinity Photo, but this skin editing is tool what I really miss if I leave from C1.

Here is more advanced explanation what Color Editor / Skin tone editor does:

The Blend Modes are all the same in both AP-1 and AP-2

Yes, but still there is no proper and full explanation of layer blend modes, how they work and what they are good at. No matter if one uses AP-1 or AP-2. Serif has had plenty of time to make proper documentation, but they haven't done. Now users must rely on third party guides and YouTube tutorials which are not comprehensive. But of course it is good that there is such third party guides and tutorials.

Yes, that would be ideal. There is more specific Direct2D API related documentation available but it is very technical.

I would try to learn more about the blend modes reading descriptions related to Photoshop blend modes. While the effects are not necessarily identical they nevertheless overlap with ones in Affinity apps so the descriptions may useful when learning about possible or typical use cases of specific blend modes. E.g. sites like this:

    https://www.bwillcreative.com/blending-modes-in-photoshop-explained/

Yes, this is good tip to try to find descriptions of photoshop blending modes. :)

At least on Windows, these effects look pretty much standard built-in Direct2D blend modes.

Thank you for this. Blending examples behind that link are hard to understand at least for me and mathematical formulas...well they are not useful for average user like me.
I think that if Sherif puts these blend modes to their products, they should explain all blend modes, their effect and use in their own documentation properly.

  13. Hello,

Where can I find all Affinity Photo 2 layer blend modes explained?
What each blend mode does etc.?
I have looked Affinity online help -> Layer blending.

There is only few basic blend modes explained: Normal, Multiply, Screen etc.

These are not explained: Darken, Darker Color, Lighten, Lighter Color, Color Dodge, Add, Soft Light, Hard Light, Vivid Light, Pin Light, Linear Light, Linear Burn, Hard Mix, Difference, Exclusion, Subtract, Hue, Saturation, Luminosity, Color, Average, Negation, Reflect, Glow, Contrast Negate, Erase and Passthrough.
Why these are not explained in online help? Where can i find explanation for these blend modes and their uses?

    Regards,
    Mika
