  1. I have encountered this problem too. What's bizarre is the Windows update in question claims to fix the exact kind of problems the update causes in Publisher.
  2. I did a bit of digging and discovered that "Show Spelling Options" actually initiates the spell check, after clicking "Find Next". This is not immediately obvious from the menu items or the GUI.
  3. I too am running into this problem. In addition, When I initiate a spell check, the first incorrect word is highlighted but I do not have any dialog box to correct it with and no way to advance to the next error. This is in Publisher, but the problem exists in Designer as well. Windows 10, Publisher ver1.9.1.979
  4. FYI, in 1.8.3.641, this problem still happens. I tried various combinations of the Alt-Tab switch and it did not work. The only way I can get it to correct itself is to shut the program down and restart.
  5. I format long-form documents and what I have had to do is create character styles for bold-italic, bold, and italic. Then I search and replace the actual bold-italic/bold/italic formatting and replace it with the character styles. It's a damn pain in the butt, but it works.
  6. Angalanse, I'd listen to Tegwyn. Sounds like great advice. I can't offer much as I use Publisher to lay out novels and they usually have little to no images in them. With thanks, Lee
  7. Angalanse, you might want to try breaking up your document into smaller blocks of text (chapters) until they isolate and squash this problem. I'll be trying that with my next book but I won't be doing that for a few months. InDesign is not an option for me any longer. With thanks, Lee
  8. Hi @Tegwyn, As I recall, I did have the baseline grid on. Not displayed, but enabled. Turning it off is not an option for me because snapping to baseline and having lines line up between spreads increases the reader experience. With thanks, Lee
  9. Thanks for the suggestions, Lagarto. Appreciated! With thanks, Lee
  10. Thanks for that insightful response, Lagarto. Thinking back, I believe I did convert a bunch of Type 1 fonts to True Type/Open Type. It was the Bitstream collection I referred to previously. If I had been paying attention, I would have changed all their names to make them unique. I will file that tip away for later. I'm glad things resolved themselves, and most importantly, that it wasn't a fault with Publisher! With thanks, Lee
  11. Pauls, I have uploaded an .afpub file and a screen grab of my system processes. There doesn't appear to be any intensive disk activity or CPU action. One additional piece of information, the original file size of the Word document was about 500KB (docx) or 9MB (rtf). The novel is about 137,000 words. Not sure if that helps. With thanks, Lee
  12. Hi Pauls, I'll put together a file for you. And thank you for the welcome, Oval.
  13. So I dug a little deeper and realized I had two versions of the ZapfHumanist font installed: One a True Type font from Corel (like Lagarto suggested) and one from a Bitstream font collection which identified as an Open Type font. I removed the Bitstream Open Type font, reloaded Publisher, and all is working as it should now. Pauls, I can upload the font, publisher doc and a PDF if you still require it. Just let me know. Thanks for the help, but sorry for wasting everyone's time. With thanks, Lee
  14. Greetings, I have run into a strange problem with regard to one of my fonts used in Publisher. For some reason which I can't explain, the smart quote characters (single and double) are being replaced upon export to PDF. The font in question is Zapf Humanist (all variants). To make sure it wasn't me screwing something up, I started a fresh Publisher document, added a text frame, and entered text, formatting for a half dozen fonts. Every font I tried looked as it should in the PDF export except Zapf Humanist. The odd thing is everything looks fine in the application (see image). I thought that maybe a font was corrupted, but to have the error happen across all font files seems strange and unlikely to me. Is this a bug or have I done something wrong? Any thoughts would be appreciated. With thanks, Lee Affinity Publisher 1.7.2Windows 10 HomeIntel(R) Core(TM) i7-8700 CPU @ 3.20GHz16GB Memory2TB HDD / 128GB SSD
  15. I have begin using Publisher to layout novels. However, speed issues are really slowing me down, especially on text that is flowing over hundreds of pages. Other aspects of the application are slow as well, not just text entry. Selecting fonts and sizes, applying styles, and changing visual options like showing/hiding baseline grid is so slow, a force quit is required. The below video shows a text entry example with a file that has virtually no graphics. It is mostly text, 503 pages long. To show the difference in performance, I first type into a single non-linked text frame. Everything works as expected. However, editing text in a linked text frame, the lag between characters appearing onscreen is almost ten seconds, per character. In fact, during that time Windows thinks the application has become unresponsive. It is really difficult to work like this. Any ideas? Is this a bug or just me? I hope it's a setting on my computer I can change.
