  1. I've been doing a deep dive project with the new Distance option in the brush panel.

In Windows Mode the length of the Distance option works but the Alpha direction is unstable. (see the attachment).

In Rope Mode the length of the Distance option is inconsistent but the Alpha direction is stable.

Does anyone know a tip or trick to make the alpha stable? I've tapped on my drawing tablet then tried to make a brush stroke with no luck - that's the only trick I've ever heard of. I also tried changing the pressure sensitivity on my drawing tablet. This glitch is driving me a little crazy. Any advice is much appreciated.

    Thanks y'all for the help.

  2. In my humble opinion, the problem with the abrupt pen pressure happens across all software platforms in Affinity. I have spent hours trying to fix the issue as well because I thought the problem was me. However, a few months ago I saw a YouTube video by someone who reviews drawing tablets and drawing programs. He had the same problem with the little bit of "thick to thin" string at the end of his strokes.

In V2 I there is a new option in the raster brushes Dynamics panel called "Distance". "Distance" doesn't work very good in "Rope Mode" but in "Windows Mode" it has helped me tremendously in gaining control over my curve values. However, when I use  "Distance" the "Force Pressure" button has to be turned off.  And, if I wish to continue the stroke with manual pen pressure again, I have to stop the brush stroke, turn distance off and try to seamlessly pick up where I stopped the stroke. Please see the attached examples.

All in all, while the brush panel options need some work, I can't tell  you how happy I am with the entire re-write of the Affinity programs. I am working on an older computer system and I do not have near the amount of high-memory functionality problems that I had in V1. That being said, Affinity is on the right track and I'm sure the brushes panel will get some more love soon! So in the mean time, maybe try working with the "Distance" curve option for smoother brush strokes, as well as using the solution suggested by ATJ. ATJ's suggestion sounds like a great one to try.

  3. I've really been working with Affinity raster brushes lately and I am humbly submitting my list of needs and wants for the Brush Creation window.

Thank you for considering my suggestions.

    • Need a "Duplicate Sub-Brush" option.

    • Need Sub-Brush sync options to Main Foundation Brush. (ie. Size Jitter, Accumulation Jitter, etc.) When you change the Size Jitter curve on one brush all Sub-Brushes have to be individually changes.

    • All curve windows need a "make bigger so you can see it better" option and graph numbers for precise control.

    • Curves desperately need a save, copy and paste option in the Brush Control window.

    • Need an opacity option for each Sub-Brush layer.

    • We really need a "flip alpha" option so we don't have to store 2 png's of alphas facing different directions on our computer system.

    • Name and size needs to be displayed under all the alphas inside a brush so we can easily find the alpha on our computer system.

    • Wish there was a drag and drop alpha into the texture panel of a brush from the Assets window.

    • When a duplicate copy is made of a brush, the name of that brush needs to transfer to that copy.

    • The name of the brush that is being used ALWAYS needs to be displayed.

    • In the Sub-Brush window the Wet Brush and Curve options need to be turned on please! :)

    • Hue, Saturation and Lightness doesn't work when Accumulation isn't at 100 percent.

    • Every time we change the base color in the main brush it changes all the other Sub-Brush colors which makes you have to change the hue, saturation and lightness on all the other Sub-Brushes which is a little time consuming.

    • The Hue Jitter needs to start at the same place every time instead of being subject to the Main Foundation Brush color.

    • Please add RGB, CMYK & grayscale color options to Sub-Brushes so each brush layer color is independent from each other. (Or you can keep it simple and add a hex code color option.)

    • Hue Jitter needs individual color cycle controls (maybe a "gradient" box control). It's too hard and time consuming to make the Hue Jitter cycle through 2 or 3 individual colors from the curve control box, as well as, control the timing of the delivery of colors on the stroke.

    • All "Jitter" controls need some kind of timing control, especially for the cyclical option.

    • Size Jitter needs a "transform object from selected point" square so alphas grow tall and/or get short from a specific point instead of throwing the alpha into various sizes from the middle of the alpha only.

    • In the "Direction Jitter" control options, we need curve profiles for making sharper and/or smoother/tighter direction turns.

    • When a gradient alpha is used in the Sub-Brush as an overlay - banding and unwanted color changes occur. Painting in the Lab/16 color profile is preferred when using layered brushes with shadows.

    • Layering of Sub-brushes with hue, saturation or luminosity doesn't work properly when a Size Jitter is applied. The Sub-Brushes skip and will not work unless the "apply at end of stroke" is used. This problem might just be on my personal computer system.

  4. Thanks, NotMyFault (I love that name). The problem isn't large documents. I've mostly been creating brushes for AP. I do restart AP when I feel I've been running up the memory usage even though I've got 16 gigs of ram and shouldn't have that problem. The brushes I've been creating will sometimes lay down twice when I start painting (now that's a memory thing) and sometimes I think it's a pen tablet relationship with AP when tapping on a tool I need to use. I've been making sure that my alpha files in my brushes don't go over 1100x1100 but some of them are stacked with up to 4 alphas. And if I have 3 alphas in a brush I certainly can't add a sizing effect - that just makes the alpha skip around inside the brush.  Do you think I need to go into the Affinity Program Files on the C drive an clean out the png files - or can I do that? Just wondering...

  5. So I cleaned out my computer of every unnecessary program, etc., installed a new SSD and a new graphics card but AP is still spiking my C drive and stalling for 2 to 3 min over and over. I can't figure it out. I've also tried to follow the advice of other people in this forum that have had the same problem. Is there another version of AP out yet or more advise on the subject that I've missed? I'm running an older system but it's a workhorse and I want it to keep going a little longer until I see how well the new graphic cards and CPUs that are coming out this year work. Oh my. Any advise is appreciated. This has gone on month, after month, after month. 🙂

  6. Hey y'all. There are 2 curve profiles that I can't adjust in the Brush Editor. Please see the attachments. Also, I've been working really hard on developing some brush packs but I read somewhere that Affinity might be releasing an "paid" updated version - if so, I would really like to work with the beta so I'm prepared for the upcoming changes in the brush editor. I've been looking for the beta link for AP but I can't find it anywhere. Can someone send me the link to the latest beta? I would really appreciate it!

    Thanks for the help. Angela

  7. OK. Yesterday I updated Photo, Designer then Publisher. The brush engine in Publisher-Designer still stalled when I edited any of the brushes (width, variance, stretch, repeat...) I've always had to be patient with myself when working in Designer. But this morning I imported my brushes into Designer only and there is absolutely no stalling so far. HALLELUJAH!!! So maybe it's just in Publisher? Thanks for checking in on me Dan! Really appreciate the responses I get here to any of my problems.

  8. Iconclast,  So I adjusted the brush a bit (see the attached). As you can see the result isn't exactly what I'm looking for but it's getting there. I think you put me on the right track with the brush you made. It's a lot of time and work creating extra outline shapes to try and make this lettering project work. As you can see, the strokes have to be laid on top of the letter. I hope they fix this bug soon. Thanks everyone for your input and suggestions!!!

  9. Thank you to everyone who replied. After I posted for some reason I applied a field blur then I liquified the graphic carefully at 50 - 60% speed, 0 hardness, 40% opacity and the Ramp was on Cosine. Doing this totally helped! It's not perfect but I think I'm on my way to making the liquify tool work the way I need it to. See the attachment. And thanks again for the attention to my request for suggestions. Angela
