any way to drag selection without moving things?

This is for Draw Persona.

 

Imagine you have a large square object with a lot of smaller squares in front of it. When I click and drag to make a selection, it just moves the large square in the back.

 

Is there a way to tell the program I want to make a selection only .... not move objects?

1. Start to drag a selection with the Move tool from outside the large square.

 

2. Make sure the big square is not selected, press and hold down the Alt key and drag a selection. It will only select items that the marquee surrounds. i.e. not the big square.

 

3. Right click on the square layer then click "lock". You can no longer select it. You will have to unlock from the layers panel if you need to move it later.
