iLKke Posted March 15 Posted March 15 I noticed a terrible lag when making brush strokes. I'm talking maybe 5fps. And for some reason it is completely gone if the layer panel is not shown! Certainly sounds like a bug. I tried reducing the thumbnail size (it can't be disabled?) but didn't notice any improvement. If it's in fact related to thumbnails that would be funny as the thumbnails update is anything but realtime. Grouping layers to hide them in the panel reduces the lag somewhat but it a poor workaround. win11 + RTX4070 in case it matters I am not sure if this is a recent issue but pretty sure at least in some previous version I used to marvel at the speed of Photo. iLKke Posted March 15 Author Posted March 15 I just realised this only happens in Embedded layers/documents! There are other issues, namely changing the layer opacity will snap back to 100%, so I need ot edi tthem by typing in numbers. I've had similar issues with blendmodes and layer fx in embedded documents. Will change the thread name to reflect this info Quote
nickbatz Posted March 16 Posted March 16 If you can, it's best to use merge visibles (or export files) to use as placeholders. They slow down the machine pretty quickly. I use lots of embedded pictures that have lots of layers (and usually embedded pictures themselves), so I know what you mean. Quote
iLKke Posted March 16 Author Posted March 16 Thanks that makes sense, but why would the Layers panel slow things down unreasonably? Everything works splendid when the layers panel is hidden, regardless of how many laters there are. And to clarify, the "root" document edits fine, the problems are when I double-click and edit any single embedded image. Quote

If I were going to guess, it's because things get loaded off the drive into RAM. Good question, though - I don't know the answer for sure. And I'm going to try hiding the Layers panel next time my machine slows down! Quote
