Hi All,

Help Needed...

I have recently had to rebuild my Mac. having spent years of simply upgrading the OS it had got to a point that apples support suggested a rebuild was the best option...
I have not lost any files as I use iCloud and one drive.
Previously I had the version 1 of the Affinity suite of app installed (purchased back in 2017) as well as the new Version 2...
The problem I am having is I am unable to open old Publisher Files that have been created in Publisher V2 since I did the rebuild and fresh install.... Designer just hangs in the loading document stage and I ultimately end up having to force quite the app... All the Affinity suite are at the latest versions.
I have made sure all add ons that had been previously installed have been added into the new install.

Any Advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Max

Update on this issue... I basically just left it opening a document and it eventually did it...no idea how long it took as I had other windows open over the top... but once it had opened one document it now opens any document in a split second... So all Good.

Hi @Max71 and welcome to the forums. After you reinstall macOS or do a major upgrade such as the jump to Sonoma or Sequoia, macOS needs to sync iCloud files and it takes hours. It's best to leave your computer on overnight to finish the job. If you try to open a document that hasn't been synced yet, or the document has linked resources that haven't been synced yet, you will see the "Loading 1 document" message for a very, very long time. If you need to get working while the synch is happening, you can force the download of the files or simply copy them to a folder on your internal drive that isn't synced to iCloud.

Cheers

Hi Mike,
As a developer of Many years I am aware of the Sync issues / timing and that wasn't the issue as I was trying to open a file that was on my desktop and synced. Hence why is was so frustrating.... However as I mentioned in my update this issue has resolved itself.

Perhaps it is best to advice not to use cloud services to open/save files or linked files.
Because these give mixed results and may cause corruption.
Just store the file first in a local, not cloud controlled, folder and only backup afterwards.

Like I had done. Thanks

@Max71 We've all been through this. Affinity won't be happy opening files from iCloud until macOS has finished syncing. It's best to wait or to move the file you need to a non-synced folder. I think it happened for the first time with the upgrade to Sonoma and then repeated with the upgrade to Sequoia.

Personally, I just left it overnight.

FYI I did the rebuild a week ago, and I have 1GB pipe so everything was synced within hours.... so everything was synced... This wasn't a sync issue! Especially as mentioned I was opening a local doc, and any sync was long completed. But thanks for the info I will remember for the future should I find myself in this unfortunate situation again.

Got it. That is odd. FYI Serif recommends that we open and save to folders that aren't synced with iCloud or similar services to avoid issues. I use iCloud myself though because it really is convenient.

Perhaps that document makes use of a linked file that was stored in iCloud?
The affinities uses absolute links this may also be the cause.
