Publisher runs laggy on Macbook pro

This has been a consistent problem with Publisher. It cannot handle large text files. I have a document  spread across hundreds of pages. It is 120,000 words. Sometimes it is inevitable that I have to make minor corrections. But it is so laggy as to be useless. Even on an M1 Macbook running Ventura it is like typing into a document on a 1980s computer.

I am not running any other programs. Closing down and restarting makes no difference. However, the lag is barely noticeable on the last page of the document. But typing anywhere within the body text, especially at the start, I get this - typing at full speed:
