lphilpot
I've seen this basic question asked before (how to create a pixel gradient that remains editable) and I realize inherently it can't be done. Or at least there's no specific tool for it.* At any rate I've tried these approaches: Apply a standard gradient to an Exposure adjustment layer mask.Problem: It doesn't remain editable and since you can't simultaneously (directly) edit a mask while seeing the underlying pixel data, it's clumsy at best. Add a Fill layer of (usually black-to-transparent) gradient type and twiddle the opacity and midpoint until it's appropriate.Problem: None of the blend modes seems to look right. Multiply is better than the others from what I saw, but still not like Exposure. Am I missing another better technique? I'll admit I've almost ignored the vector capabilities of Photo because as a landscape photographer I have no need for them. Maybe there's something that can be done with gradient vector objects on a mask? But even so, the non-visibility of pixel data while editing a mask remains an issue.* Thanks. * So, a couple of wish list items: A gradient(s) / shape(s) adjustment layer and translucent mode when masks are being edited. Are you listening, Serif? lphilpot
Well, I just discovered another variation that might work but I'm not sure why it does what it does. Seems backward. Add an Exposure adjustment layer Add a Fill layer and make it a child of the adjustment layer Make it opaque black to transparent That's what I don't understand. It's obviously not functioning like a regular mask, otherwise it would be the reverse. For example, assuming I add a -1 stop adj layer and want to darken the top of the image, this works. The layer thumbnail looks correct with white at the top fading to black at the bottom (reveal the top, conceal the bottom). But the gradient itself shows the opposite order. What am I missing? I realize it's not a true layer mask (is it), but is that the difference? Yeah, I briefly experimented with a gradient-filled vector object but I need to get more familiar with them. Per my last post a child Fill layer under the adjustment layer also works, albeit it somewhat unintuitively IMO. I don't know why the thumbnail and the gradient itself seem to be out of phase... Thanks.
