Expanding Stroke or Contour Tool not working properly with sparkle shape

Never had this problem before... When I want to expand the stroke, it turns all the corners to look like miter joints. This also only ever happens with a sparkle shape I created using the shape builder tool. It also does something similar when using the contour tool.
