By dragging the image onto the layer icon, you are masking the red shape with your image. The image will become an alpha channel mask. Since the image opaque, nothing will happen to the red shape while the image seemingly "disappears".

If you want to place the image inside the red shape, then you have to drag it onto its name in the Layers panel. That's called clipping.

If you drag and don't let go, on canvas you well see a live preview of what will happen. Press Esc to abort. Like that you can practice the Layers panel gestures. It can take some time to get used to this workflow. :)
