I have a black drawing that I converted to a vector image in another program. It has many parts that I would like to adjust the color of individually. when I chose to divide this path it divides it but also fills in some sections. example-  a round eye outline gets filled in. In other programs it would keep the empty part of the eye empty instead of filling it in. Other times it would fill that blank part in with white along with the rest of the background, this could them be removed if I only wanted the black line part. So affinity designer is filling in closed off sections that were meant to be empty. How do I avoid this and keep empty areas empty? Otherwise how can I manually go in and remove these filled in paths

Hi and welcome!

That's a difficult to trace one in order to get and keep closed paths then. Thus it also depends on the tracing algorithms and scheme/method here for an afterwards divide.
