Cannot use pathfinder / Geometry if objects are grouped

Recommended Posts

I can't use the pathfinder / Geometry if the objects are in a group, it's very difficult for me to work with, whereas if I use CorelDraw or Ai it's very helpful, because there's no need to back up the object.
as an example :
i want to cut one side of the object curve group with one other curve that is not in the group, the Subtract, Intersect, and Xor buttons don't work.

ask for a solution, and hopefully it will be fixed soon.
Thank you very much

That's the "Affinity logic" (and I don't even mean it pejoratively) of Group layers: the top object wants to interact with the selection, but the actual "Group" layer is empty; the objects inside are its children. So strictly "mathematically speaking", there's nothing for the top object to interact with.

So if you want to interact with the children, you can:

  • open the group layer and select each child layer (click the top one, then shift-click the bottom one), then command- click (control-click on Win? – no idea) to add the top object
  • move the top object into the group and select all children but not the parent "Group" layer
  • Layer menu > Promote Group To Layer and move the top object into the layer
  • … & various combinations thereof…
  • depending on which result you want to achieve, you may also want to use "Layer > Geometry > Merge Curves instead of grouping the objects you want to cut

to back up the object

Option-click on the boolean buttons creates a non-destructive compound object (technically a "Compound" layer).

I often create illustrations with many layers

If that's the case, you may probably want to avoid too complex boolean operations anyway. Affinity's booleans are … pathetic, to put it mildly. Every now and then I'd end up copying my paths to AI CS5, apply the pathfinder and copy them back. Example:
