Typing "abbreviation" period vs. sentence ending period

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering if there was a way to type a period that denotes an abbreviation? There is a special macro in LaTeX that does this, and it has ramifications for typesetting and automatic capitalization.

I type a lot of bacteria names (like E. coli), and the "fix the autocapitalization" dance is getting real old, especially because it interferes with the "make sure my italicization is in the right place" dance.

Have you considered turning off that auto-correct option?

Other than that, in case you're not aware of it, your simplest dance step is probably to hit Ctrl+Z when the unwanted auto-capitalization occurrs. For example, type E. coli and as soon as it changes to Coli press Ctrl+Z and it will change back.

But in your situation I'd probably just turn the option off.
