While Affinity sorts out the bugs, I reinstalled AP 1.6.7 in order to get back the media browser (which was removed from 1.7) and gain access to the original Nik Collection. 1.6.7 ran flawlessly on my system (MacBook Pro, late 2013) and I didn't have any performance issues.

No Media Browser in Mac 1.7.0 Update. Nik Plugins No Longer Work

Craig Crawford posted a topic in Pre-V2 Archive of Affinity on Desktop Questions (macOS and Windows)

The media browser isn't located on the view menu in version 1.7 on the Mac. (I updated my software from the Apple Store). The plug-ins for the original Nik Collection also no longer work on 1.7. Get updating fonts message and then Affinity Photo stops responding. Is there a way to return to 1.6? I never ran into a problem with that version.
