That’s by design. The Geometry operations only work with filled shapes, not strokes.

You can do the following, if it suits your purposes:
Have your main shape. Do the lines and figures you want to use. Drag them inside the main shape. Change the blend mode to Erase. This way it's non destructive and you won't have to expand the strokes.
