A printer will not print vectors directly, so rasterization happens at one point anyways. So I don't see why this would be an issue.

I've had a quick go in Illustrator and it does the exact same thing - You can either have Raster brush, or vector with no texture.

It may depend on the actual brush you use, but usually Illustrator expands the strokes just fine:

From collaboration to later editability to file size limitations there are a million reasons not to rasterize vectors until the actual plate production.

Why would it end up as a mess? If you have, say, a (global) blue fill and a (global) green stroke, changing either one doesn’t affect the other. So if you were to change the green to the same blue as you used for the fill, you’d have exactly the situation I described and your palette wouldn’t suddenly be deluged with extra swatches.

Changing colors is only one of many uses for select similar. What if I want to move only blue objects around? Make pathfinder operations with them? Distribute them to layers? Change opacity? Etc., etc. For anyone making complex artworks this is a basic feature like I don‘t know, copy & paste. Inventing workarounds (that don’t work) for something like that shouldn’t be necessary at all.

  3. It‘s really just a bandaid. I‘m curious, what would be an illustration production workflow with AD? Obviously using brushes makes the artwork unusable for printers or other people working on it with different apps. Rasterizing is not always (almost never) an option. So is the artwork just supposed to sit in the app and do nothing? (It may sound harsh, but rest assured I‘m just respectfully curious).

Any chance you can attach the .afdesign file in question?

@GabrielMNot the file in question, because I'm bound by NDA, but this test file has the same problem. Although this time AD Desktop matches the brush, but that's not the issue. Also attached the resulting EPS.

@DM1 Thanks for taking time for this, yes the strokes were selected. A monoline pencil path expands fine, the problem appears when you use brush strokes.

  5. I've created an illustration on the iPad, using brush ink pen strokes. When I wanted to expand the strokes, nothing happened (Maybe it is a good idea to tell a user what didn't work and why, could save him a few Google trips). So I tried to export the design to work on it with Illustrator. To my surprise in the PDF, SVG, EPS exports the strokes were expanded, but in the crudest way possible — straight paths aren't straight, rounded endings cut off, but best of all, the brush stroke applied to them was not the ink pen I used, but a simple monoline stroke.

So at this point I'm only trying get to the actual paths/brush strokes to work on it in Illustrator. Surely, I thought, AD on the desktop will be able to help here. Opened up the iPad file, ink pen is gone. Ok, no matter, just give me those strokes — copied to Illustrator: they are rasterized. Exported to EPS: rasterized again. Unchecked anything remotely related to rasterizing: yeah, good old expanded monoline strokes. I applied the most basic pen stroke to all brush strokes, they still come out as expanded.

Is there any way to get those paths? How would I get the artwork to a printer? None of the export options is remotely adequate to send to print. Are they just extremely poor, or am I overlooking something basic? I'm on a deadline and would blow it, if I had to recreate the artwork.

  6. I really, really wanted to love AD, bought it the day it hit the app store. But here we habe a behavior that‘s been there since the very beginning. For a serious vector app, this is unacceptable. What good is the 650 billion magnification if the outlines are wonky as hell? Case in point, here is how a few vector apps handle expanding stroke. In each of them I made a straight vertical line, gave it a thickness of 50pt and round endings. (The proportions differ because I didn‘t care for the line length and zoom level to be equal)

Autodesk Graphic, an old app, came out with iOS6 I think? Only gets updates to be compatible with new OS, no new features. But the bread and butter of every vector artist, it does as expected:

Vectornator a FREE app, quite recent and changes the UI every now and then. For a free app it‘s really solid and has some nice features. It does lack some, like aligning nodes (not that AD can do that). Graphic can do that by the way. Back to our test, expand stroke gives us this:

Again, clean precise point placement, ready to be modified with ease.

I am sure there are many more apps that handle stroke expansion the same way, some of them share the vector engine that was open source at some point or whatever.

    And here is AD.

The most expensive and the most extensive app on my iPad gives me THIS? Make no mistake, AD on Mac gives me the same output (1.7 beta as well). It’s the equivalent of not only coming late to work, but also wearing pants around your neck, shoes as gloves and diver fins on your feet. This makes absolutely no sense, the nodes placement, why is it asymmetrical? Why are there so many? Why do I have to clean up nodes after such a mundane task, I never even think about it in other desktop and iPad apps, it‘s a feature that just "works".

AD 1.7 has addressed many of my critical points and it‘s great, but this is simply defunct, there’s no way around it. What good is an app for, if I have to change to another just to get the expected result. Please please please do something about it sooner than later.

  7. Is there a way to turn a rubber band (path preview) for the pen tool? This is really a nuts and bolts feature.

Is there a way to make the selection in the align menu permanent? For example, I want the shapes to align to last selected object. If I align them in the menu, it works as exected. If I align them by clicking the direct icons in the toolbar, the key object is disregarded. It is very cumbersome having to click twice and waiting for the menu to show up. (I know the animation is not that long, but just clicking the icon is way faster)

Is there a way to align nodes with the align tools? Currently if two nodes are selected, it aligns the whole object to the artboard.

These are pretty essential things for my workflow and are all present in Illustrator.

  8. I'm quite new to AD, so these might be stupid questions, but I couldn't find any answers.
