Sunday afternoon, rainy day, I have no excuses, I really have to correct and recreate all those InDesign documents I use for my activity as a freelance IT consultant and that have become obsolete because of the new fiscal rules...
But wait, INDD 2019 is such a bore... and just a couple days ago a client asked me if I could suggest him an alternative to Adobe...
Right, I opened Publisher for the vey first time and set about designing my new invoices and modules... Obviously I first tried to migrate content from INDD opening PDFs and trying copy and paste.
I struggled hard to locate all instruments and procedures that Affinity deviously hid in strange places, different from Adobe standards, but then I started marvelling at how clever and ingenious Publisher instruments are, once I ceased to try to use a new software as an old one I really got going and went from frustration to fun.
I created and easily modified lots of tables and experimented with all attributes of characters and paragraphs, page layout, guides, alignment, everything went very smoothly and I only had a couple minor problems when I started printing and some graphics opened from an INDD generated PDF that on my EIZO looked OK came out a bit faded, after a brief search I found the culprit in the opacity slider in the layers palette and then just when I was wondering why Affinity calls this a Beta finally Publisher started crashing. And kept on crashing, but every time resurrecting the document, until I deleted a text frame that I had pasted from an INDD document, for three times in a row, after adding a few words to the pasted text frame a space bar stroke crashed the application. Deleted the frame, saved as with a different name, everything ok.
Ah I was forgetting, export as a PDF/X-4 don't work, other variants as X-3 and "for print" do work.
All in all a very positive first impression, Affinity is awesome and I have no doubt that I will succeed in helping many clients to migrate.
I'm on Mojave and even Suitcase Fusion 20.0.2 had not an issue activating/ deactivating Fonts to Publisher
