RAW files bright when opened

When I open RAW (NEF) files, they are often very bright and in some cases washed out. Adjusting exposure and or brightness helps, but then makes it hard to get the proper overall exposureI expect. The raw image looks fine on my camera and even Apple Preview, Pixelmator. Is there a setting I can adjust to resolve this? Attachment with Affinity on left, Pixelmator bottom right, Preview top right. All untouched, opened from same NEF. Shot with a Nikon D70
