Spoke too soon. I now realise this is likely connected to Typefaces. I am using Fontbase but perhaps I should do something else? What is best practise?

I have a shape that I need to make a solid version of, it is made of eight groups of two shapes and formats something like a flower shape - see file. I need s filled version of this and am not familiar enough with AD to know the best way to do this.

PC, W11 UpDate Mar 11: a day later this behaviour seems to have totally disappeared. I have no idea what I did or didn't do, I lost patience after a dozen reboots and posted on the forum. Today all seems well so we should consider this closed (until the next time!)

I updated to the latest 1.10.xx. The machine has been rebooted. On loading a previous file I went to create a new artboard and got an endless eggtimer. Closed reopened, created a new file. same thing What might be causing this?
