Somehow I ended up with a transparent mask it is a square smaller than my image but it follows my cursor around and want to remove it, please tell me how thank you

How to use selection brush tool to cut out an object from the background to edit,rotate, place it in another image. I can select what I want to remove but I can't locate the "delete" button to finish. There is a delete button I can see, but it is "grayed out" so I can't. I thought selecting part of an image meant I can delete it...true? I get that the image has to be "unlocked" first to do this

I am on Windows and I bought my program on Affinity store, saving to my PC...not using the cloud for Affinity
