  1. In the Designer desktop app, the option in Preferences > General to disable automatic selection of another object after an object is deleted, by un-checking 'Prefer to keep selection after delete',  is very useful.

It would also be helpful to have this option in the Designer iOS app.

For example, when going around the canvas selecting multiple objects at a time and deleting them, it's easy to accidentially include an automatically selected object in the next group of objects to be deleted, as there's a tendency to get into a rhythm of pressing a second finger on the screen during every selection. If the automatically selected object is beyond the current view/zoom extent there's no clear visual cue that it's been included in the next multiple object selection, and by the time I realise it's been unintentionally deleted it's often far too late to recover it.

To avoid the above happening, at present one needs to be consious of selecting the first object of each multiple selection without a second finger pressed on the screen, in order to clear the automatic object selection that resulted from the previous delete operation, and then press the second finger on the screen again only when selecting additional objects. It's easy to mess this up and not notice at the time.

First of all the auto select drop down in move tool which was added to Affinity Photo in V2 has now been added to both Affinity Designer and Affinity Publisher, as requested numerous times from customers.

Does disabling Auto Select also mean that when an object/layer is deleted, the Designer App won't automatically select another random object/layer?

  3. Don't hold your breath on this. I downloaded the Affinity Designer trial in March 2020, and immediately ran into this issue.

I emailed support with a detailed explanation of the problem, and the attached video demonstration comparing identical workflows in Designer and Illustrator. I received a reply stating that it was already a known issue and was logged with the developers, and would hopefully be fixed very soon.

On the basis of the above information I purchased the Designer desktop and iOS apps, but have so far been unable to use either of them for my illustration work because of this problem. I've had to stick with Adobe Illustrator CS6 instead.

In April 2020 I emailed support again, to let them know that I'd narrowed the cause of the error down to the Divide operation creating slightly mis-matched curves when dealing with curved geometry.

I've emailed for an update a couple of times since then, and the reply has remained that the problem is with the developers to be fixed.

On the Affinity website Designer is described as being 'full of tools meticulously developed for achieving high productivity, while maintaining 100 percent accurate geometry', under the heading 'Rock solid vector tools'. Unfortunately I have a hard time agreeing with these statements at present, but I do hold onto the hope that it will eventually be resolved. I particularly look forward to being able to use the Designer iOS app for my illustration work.

  4. I'm being driven crazy by the way the next curve/layer in the layers list is automatically selected when I delete a curve. It's a particular problem on the iPad app, where I often need to select and delete a large number of objects throughout my design (line overshoots after drawing with overlapping curves and running the Divide function). This is most efficiently done with the Add to Selection option activated, however when I select and delete a set of curves, another curve somewhere on the canvas gets automatically selected. With Add to Selection still active, when I select the next object(s) I intend to delete, the automatic selection remains included in my selection and gets inadvertently deleted with it. The auto-selected object is often beyond the boundaries of the current view so there's no clear visual cue that it's happened, and sometimes I don't notice the missing objects until much later in my workflow, when it's far too late to correct the mistake with the Undo command. To prevent this from happening I have to remember to 'deselect all' after every select > delete operation, which is very tedious and is easy to forget. Please give us the option to disable this Auto Selection function!!!
