My afbook on Ventura, latest version of publisher will crash affinity publisher if, the child documents are not open. So the child documents first need to be open, then afbook works as expected.

My MAC OS Ventura Network->wifi->TCP/IP->Configure IPv6 is set to "Automatically" - I'm not sure why this would change, perhaps a function of the modem/router ? I have a mesh network. I'm only guessing now. But as I said, if I wait some time, that error message goes away and it eventually works. I suspect we (you) beat this to death with your image capture -> AP2 suggestions - as I am now a happy camper.

Well, I view it more as a timing bug in and around the api call, because if I wait a few seconds, click again, or switch to another scanner and then back, it works. That is why I said earlier that the environment in and around calling the api is different. Anyway, your second suggestion, simply outputting image capture to AP2 is fine. Doing it twice creates a 2nd tab which is ok, so the image can be modified, then copy/pasted to the first tab. This is a good enough solution for me and it is out of the box, w/o having to create custom code (automator) that perhaps can break in a future OS upgrade. AP needs to fix the underlying issue as the fix might expose other issues. I can make Affinity Publisher crash for example and had to identify work arounds - so what I'm saying is that their qualification/system test processes need to be enhanced - yes, every piece of code has a bug, its just a matter of time for it to be exposed .....

I see. Of course I can try, but my question is, will this create a new layer in the open tab or a new AP tab ?

there are bugs in the affinity implementation. I sometimes get a -9921 (Failed to open a session on the device) but yet the scanner is running. Perhaps a timing issue.

@loukash, thank you for the idea, I will look into it. I was hoping that by indicating it didn't work for one brother scanner, but yet another it did work, that info might help Affinity. The fact that it works for Pixelmator pro, and perhaps other photo editing apps, should be a stimulus to accelerate a fix. In terms of the "same process", well it might not be the same "environment" - timing, memory management, race conditions, whatever, recursive code if they implement that way. This is an annoying situation, similar to have to work around using nik collection on an apple silicon. Affinity needs to strive for perfection.

Let me add that scanner from Brother Brother HL-2280DW CUPS seems to work well - and when I tried various combinations for Brother MFC-L2750DW series-AirPrint some importing caused Affinity Photo to actually crash. I believe these bugs are latent for many versions of Affinity Photo.

Understood, but it continues to happen. The use case is save file, but don't close file, and close Publisher, then it crashes. Separately I have been able to crash publisher with a very large file, when bringing up resource manager. I have split the file and now use the books feature.

Preflight is reporting missing characters, which are not in fact missing. They are Emoji's from the publisher menu. This bug is a carryover from V1. I am using V2 on Ventura, see attached png file for eample.

Using V2 affinity publisher photo and designer. Using Mac Studio Ventura. In publisher, place a photo 2 photo. Switch to photo using the studio switcher. Right click on the layers panel in photo, there is no merge visible option, however, from the layers menu in photo, there is a merge visible option. My work flow normally uses right click

I just did an experiment for you Chris. I saved the document on my internal SSD drive and closed affinity publisher (without closing document), no crash. Same experiment with external USB Hard Drive is when the crash happens. I save the document, then close affinity publisher. Saved document is not affected, just crash.

Locally to a USB attached HD. I was hoping original crash report would help you. I have not tried with a "file" on my internal MAC Studio SSD.

Unfortunately I have not heard back from serif on this one. What I noticed was, even if I save an open file, and then quit, is when it crashes. However, if I close the file first, then quit, no crash.

File is saved, but sometimes crashes on exit. Same behavior with publisher. Haven't yet tried designer. All V2. I am using 1.10.4 on iMAC Catalina. The level help page seems to imply that realtime clipping preview works on any channel as per the below snippet. What I found was that it doesn't work, say on any of the R, G, B channels, unless first a level was modified on the Master. This is repeatable and explains why some you tubers first level Master, then the individual channels so that realtime clipping preview works. Having said that, the actual level adjustment does change if first doing a R, G, or B, just the realtime clipping preview does not seem to work -> confusion. Settings The following settings can be adjusted: Select a color mode from the first pop-up menu. Specify a single color channel to apply the adjustment to, including the layer's alpha channel. Master (the default choice) applies the adjustment to all channels. Select from the second pop-up menu. Black Level—determines the range of pixels in the image considered to be pure black. Drag the slider to the right to include pixels in the range (thereby increasing shadows), drag to the left to exclude pixels (thereby reducing shadows). White Level—determines the range of pixels in the image considered to be pure white. Drag the slider to the left to include pixels in the range (thereby increasing highlights), drag to the right to exclude pixels (thereby reducing highlights). Gamma—determines the distribution of mid-tone pixels in the image. Enter a gamma value or drag the slider to the left to redistribute pixels towards the black point, drag to the right to redistribute towards the white point. Output Black Level—remaps the output level of absolute black. Moving the slider to the right makes the image look more pale and washed out. Output White Level—remaps the output level of absolute white. Moving the slider to the left lessens the intensity of highlights in the image. To create a negative-style (inverted) image, position the Black Level slider further to the right than the White Level. Holding the whilst modifying the Black Level or White Level provides a realtime clipping preview.

My autobiography is 500 pages long with about 600 png illustrations. This broke word on the MAC and I ported the document to affinity publisher. All good and wonderful except that affinity publisher does not support auto numbering of tables, figure, etc. and of course cross references which is the theme of this thread. How I wish Serif would wake up and support these features. I can live with some of the other esoteric features missing from Word, but auto numbering and cross referencing, especially cross referencing is a killer. Affinity Photo is such a great tool but can be made even better ....

I am using 1.9.3 on Catalina. I would like to export selections across pages. Selection area and selection only, seems to only work on one page at a time. Yes, I realize I can choose to export a range of pages (which is also difficult to figure out, since it requires adding pages to the all pages option - there should be a specific Page range option for the Area field) - but if I do that, then I need to edit out portions after the pdf is created.

Walt, again thank you for responding. I guess it boils down to having the ability to provision, so to speak the shift+click in the master when setting up the document, instead of remembering that it is a manual operation after the fact. Why is this bothering me? I guess for synergy, in that in the master you can set up frame links within the page, so why not have the ability to also provision frame links across pages in the master. It was only after you said that it can be done, and my examination of the help pages, did I find buried at the bottom of one of the pages the shit+click sequence. I am a happy camper - except for the inability to have auto numbered figure labels with cross referencing, my entire experience was a success.

Walt, again thank you for responding. Yes, add pages from file, yes, it works, but I think there are bugs. I cannot share my file because of personal information, but after adding pages, I tried inserting text at the end and it seemed like I was viewing the source file. I cannot reproduce. Regarding your other comment about auto spill over, I think you were suggesting I hit the shift key at the link and if that is what you think is the solution, yes, that worked. That is not quite what I was asking for, but yes, that did work for me. My intent of the original post was to express gratitude that affinity photo is able to be used on a file that "killed" Microsoft Word and I thought my observations would be helpful. I was a software/firmware manager for over 40 years and had customers around the world so I know how frustrating it is to get "soft" feedback. It is not easy to reproduce quirks, bugs, unexpected workflows, etc. When they are easy, I do provide specific examples. I am on a MAC because it stays up 7x24xforever ....
