"Child" Layers and "Ctrl + J" Question

Recommended Posts

Last week, I posted a question about an inability to locate the layer upon which I could 1) Clone; 2) Patch; 3) Copy/Paste; 4)Paint a transparent background after a (belated) Crop skewed the image about 5 degrees "north-by-northeast."

I started from scratch, started the entire project over again. I used the Ctrl + J shortcut that Toltec gave me. This worked! I saved the project as an Affinity file, and then Merged the Layers Down. The upper-left-hand corner of the edited image disappeared, and the corner returned to transparency. While this will dissuade me from Merging Layers in the future--because what I am calling the "child" layers DID "take"--I'd like to know if the particular manipulation of "New Layer from Selection Copy" (Ctrl + J)--not a "legit" Affinity dropdown menu choice--could have...dropped the edited corner? Can this problem of inability to Clone, Patch, etc., etc., be a conflict with my Windows 7? (I will never buy a Windows 10 machine and have given away two Windows 8 systems to charity.)

If there are any articles where Affinity and Windows 7 are discussed, I'd really appreciate hearing from you.
