On iPad, close the apps. Then start Designer. Use a 1-finger double-tap on the Splash Screen to get the dialog I referenced above.

Flood selection tool does nog work on a placed image. The same Goes for tonal selection.

In the meantime I found out that Sketchbook from Autodesk (its free) supports grids with a variety of vanishing points, incl fish eye grids. 

Koalatools.com sells different kind of transparent grids ($ 3,95 each; $ 15 sets of 5 grids) and sketchbooks with printed grids.

I want to create Escher-like (fisheye) drawings.

I cant't find a way to convert the content of a layer to a smart object.

Something like there is in Ps where you can paint something and right click on the layer to covert it to a smart object
