Hi Fernsie,
Welcome to Affinity Forums :)
Import your greyscale image image as a new layer tapping the ellipsis icon in the toolbar on top, and selecting Place ▸ Place Document (to import from cloud services) or Place Image to import from Photos app, then with the greyscale layer selected in the Layers Studio tap the ellipsis icon again and select Rasterise ▸ Rasterise To Mask to convert it to a layer mask.
