  1. When working with an image, if you export it then close the image, before it closes a little "close document" window comes up that says, "image xxx has been modified. The document is about to close, would you like to save your changes?" How does exporting it modify it? Just to be clear, the chain of events is: edit or create image, save it as afphoto, export it as jpg or tiff, then close. So what changes after the "save"?
  2. It was an afphoto file, so just an image file, with a pixel layer taken into the plug-in. This crash report is from January 1, it's the most recent one that was there; I don't remember when the crashing started. Now, I've played with it some more and found this: I had a file opened in NIK for almost an hour and it didn't crash. I didn't play with it, I just moved some sliders briefly and then left it. I went back later and did it again. Finally I saved it back to AP and everything was fine. But when the crashes happened, I was experimenting, moving sliders around to see what effects different settings cause, back and forth, back and forth, change, change, change. (I look for effects, not necessarily realism, in my work.) It's in the middle of doing this that the crashes happen. It's kind of like maybe NIK or AP buffers all the changes until the file is saved, and some buffer filled up and then boom! What do you think of that idea? f1be3b57-37ef-47a5-a4cb-2f084e6ee62f.zip
  3. I had read that the only change from version 1.6.1 to 1.6.2 was the social media links so I didn't bother with it. At any rate, I downloaded the new version and it still crashed. I had to play with the sharpener a little longer (might have been 5 minutes) but it did. Here is the crash notice.
  4. AP has started crashing when I use either of the sharpening tools in the NIK collection. If I just go there, make an adjustment and then come back quickly, it's fine. But if I play with the sliders for a couple minutes, AP crashes. (There's a Windows message that says AP has stopped working.) I first noticed it a couple days ago and it happens every time if I give it just a minute or so. I use several of the NIK tools regularly and this only happens with the sharpeners. I'm using Windows 8.1 and AP Is this a known problem? (I couldn't find any posts about it, but I also couldn't find any on the NeatImage crashes until I asked here and someone responded.)
  5. Well, I definitely think it's a good thing, for the very reason you guys are talking about. Same as with View Points. I was just wondering if there was something I was missing about it.
  6. Is there an "official" explanation of "New View" and "Views" under the top View menu? I can kind of see what they're about just by playing with them but I wonder if there are nuances I haven't found. I found the help video about View Points but nothing about View>Views.

I'm using the latest versions of AP ( and Neat Image plug-in ( They used to work fine together, but both have recently been updated, and I don't know whether I've used the Neat Image plug-in since the updates. AP takes an exception and crashes after the plug-in call regardless whether I'm working on .tif, .psd, or .afphoto files. Other plug-ins seem to be fine (NIK collection and PortraitPro). A week or so ago, after a crash, the Crash Reporter window came up and I filled in the info but haven't heard anything about it. I expected to see some posts here about it but don't find anything; am I the only one? I'm using Windows 8.1 64-bit and the 64-bit version of Neat Image.

  9. Adding a mask layer to a pixel layer is easy, but how do you delete the mask if you decide you don't want it? When I select a mask layer it always also selects the pixel layer it's attached to. Thanks
  10. Yeah, I tried that but it still comes down to personal judgement about where the line is between "red and not red." I wasn't happy with where I was putting it so I tried to let the program decide for me. Wasn't exactly the perfect decision.
  11. I think the fact that the adjustment layers affected virtually the entire image shows that more was selected than just the nostrils; but the dashed selection line was only around the nostrils. I tried several times using the Selection Brush on only the nostrils but I wasn't happy with my selections. (I wanted only the red, but all of the red.) So I decided to let the program make the selection for me. I'm going to try your suggestion of making a new image from the selections. Thanks
  12. That's the really weird part! That "halo" is what the skin color is supposed to be; it's where I used the Selection Brush to subtract the lips. (Because the selection I ended up with was actually nostrils, lips, and hair and I only wanted nostrils.) So the halo is where the adjustment layers didn't affect the image. That's why I say the adjustments affected more than the selected areas.

  14. I tried very hard to explain that this is exactly what I did. My steps 1-5 were making the selection, after which I used the adjustment layers. The adjustments affect most of the image, not just the selections. There's not much to see in the layers panel. Here it is. Again: "Merge visible" so I'm working on only one layer, followed by selections on the merged layer, then adjustment layers.
  15. It seems I don't really understand selections (or how to make them). In this photo, I wanted to eliminate the red inside the nostrils so I wanted to select just that red-ish area and then use adjustments such as HSL to lighten or eliminate the red. It seemed to work okay except that after I had only the desired areas selected, my adjustment layers were affecting other parts of the image. For this screenshot, I used an extreme amount of levels adjustment so the effect is easy to see. My intent was for the levels adjustment to effect only the selected area in the nostrils but it darkened virtually everything except the area immediately around the lips. This is how I did this: 1. Layer> "merge visible" to create a clean top layer. 2. Use color picker to select a tiny spot of red in the nostril. 3. Select>Select Sampled Color... This resulted in most of the image being selected since it's practically all some sort of red. 4. Adjusted the selection tolerance until the desired part of the nostrils was selected. At this point the lips and hair were also selected. 5. At this point I tried to use the Selection Brush to subtract the lips and hair, but I found that, in fact, actually everything was selected except the nostrils, lips, and hair. So I used Select>Invert Pixel Selection. Then I used the brush to subtract the lips and hair. So now I had only the red part of the nostrils selected and I used HSL and Levels to change the extreme red, but I found the adjustment affects extending way beyond the selected part of the nostrils. The weirdest thing, to me, is that even when I used the Selection Brush to subtract virtually the whole image except the nostrils, the adjustment layer effect still extended way past the selections. I guess this is a long-winded way to ask, "Why are my adjustments affecting more than my selections?"

  18. I don't understand. How can the picture not be on a layer? it's a pixel layer.
  19. It is a nice shadow under the "layer effects" window. But I was hoping for more.
  20. I've tried this over and over, with no result. I've tried light canvas with dark shadow, and vice versa. Also tried with the "transparent" canvas with no color. Never any result on the image or canvas. The pixel layer has the little fx to show that something is applied, but it doesn't show on the image. I'm using v on Windows 8.1. Suggestions, please.
