  1. Thanks, MEB. Managed to download it in the end and did the edits I needed... good to know I won't get any conflict issues with the MAS version. The beta's quite buggy and it was frustrating to lose my viginette layer because of the grid it adds (already seen this has been logged as a bug... I hoped it wouldn't be there on export to jpeg, but it was worse), and it seems to run a lot harder on my computer -- fans going the whole time. Oh well, at least I've got the work done! Thanks, Jenn
  2. Hi all, I've created a doc in ios, and saved to cloud as .afphoto. I've just tried to open it on my desktop, but it's giving me an error saying it failed to open document because it contains features from a later version of AP. I get that there's a beta for 1.6, but I didn't want to have to have a beta copy on my computer (potentially conflicting with the mac app store 1.5 version)... has anyone else run into this problem and is there a way around it? Surely it would have made sense to ensure the features of ios were compatible with the current live version of desktop AP. Thanks, Jenn
  3. Thanks so much, MEB! I really appreciate the help, and the sample file showing the steps.
  4. Thanks very much, MEB! That clarifies things a lot and I'll have a look through section 4 as well. One more question, if you don't mind? This is the tutorial I'm trying to replicate in AP (http://blog.spoongraphics.co.uk/tutorials/how-to-make-a-letterpress-texture-effect-in-photoshop), but I'm stumbling over one section of it... it says to create a mask layer on the text layer, and then select & copy the black and white image you want to use as a texture, and paste it into the mask. It's the paste control I'm struggling with... when I paste, it creates a new layer with the image instead of applying it to the mask I've created. I've tried alt clicking into the mask and pasting into there, but it still does the same thing, creating a new layer instead, so the mask remains blank and therefore no effect is applied to the text. Is there a paste option I'm missing? Thanks and apologies for the basic questions (my knowledge level is quite varied between features as I'm learning everything on the go rather than linearly)!
  5. I've figured out the missing link... on the original file I used the "rasterise to mask" layer option, which introduced transparency to the layer, allowing the mask to work. I guess Affinity Photo doesn't recognise black as transparent on layer masks in the same way photoshop does...?
  6. Hi all, I've been using layer masks and recently followed a great tutorial that explained how to use a black and white image as a mask to create transparency in text layers, allowing the background to show through and create a grunge effect on the text. I did this, and it worked perfectly -- the black sections of the mask were transparent and the white, opaque. This was only a week or so ago and as far as I'm aware I'm on the same version of AP and Mac OS. Today I tried it again, but this time the mask treated any solid area (regardless of colour) as opaque, and therefore the technique didn't work. I assumed I was doing something wrong, so I opened up the file it had worked on previously and I released the layer mask applied to the text. It was no longer black and white; it was white and transparent. The original file I'd imported to use as a mask (and I named the layer the filename so I'm certain which one it was!) was actually a jpeg picture of paper, which I then edited to B&W, so it definitely had no transparency. It also remained a mask after it had been released, even though it was by itself, on the same level as every other standard layer. If I, instead of releasing the mask, use ALT click to edit it, it is black and white! I can't for the life of me figure it out... any idea or suggestions of what I might be doing wrong? I hope that explanation is clear enough... Thanks, Jen
