Filling spaces between letters

If I divide and remove, it just gets worse. I can divide and change the fill color to make it look right, but that messes up the cut file. 🤷♀️

I can't seem to figure out a way to work around this filling in the section between f and t. I expanded the stroke and the added to make sure this would be a seemless SVG file to use with a cutting machine. It will cut fine, but I need it to look correct as well. Any ideas?
