can't copy paste - is this program even useable?

yes, I need a small canvas. I'm building out a web graphic and it has to place precisely in a small area. but why would it paste entirely OFF the canvas? like if I copy and paste into a new document there's no reason I'd ask it to paste off the canvas by default. I did eventually find it but this is not encouraging. copypaste example.afphoto -

trying to copy and paste and the pixels show up in the thumbnail and not in the image. turning on and off the layer does nothing. Attached screenshot shows the image in the layer, and not in the document I would love to use this as a Photoshop alternative, but this feels embarassingly unfinished and buggy. Brand new M1 mac, newest Affinity Photo bought in March
