Fill shape with color

I drew a square with marquee tool so that I could fill with color for my background. I cannot get it filled with color.

How is the background removed from a photo or object. I just purchased Affinity Photo and am looking for the freehand tool to select all of the background color so that I can take it out. Tutorial I looked at showed me how to use the freehand tool. Did I get a version with no Freehand tool?
