I have exactly the same problem I am using Avenir font. The heavy and light looks fine, but Avenir book pdfs just like yours and need to get this job approved by my client and off to print, so I feel your pain. We need to sort this problem fast, or I'll have to stick with InDesign.

I have created a flyer in Publisher and the fonts will not pdf correctly, which is a massive problem as I am a Graphic Designer and need to send the pdf to my client. The fonts are managed using Font Agent Pro, and I am working on a brand new iMAC which is running Mojave OS 10.14.4. The fonts look fine on screen, but turn into numbers and glyphs when pdfed. See screen snapshots of file and resulting pdf. I have tried turning off subset fonts when making the pdf as suggested in a another discussion, but it make no difference. I managed to get it work last week by changing fonts,, but the problem is back again this morning. The font is Avenir book. 1268 - CCT Seaborn Cruises Flyer v1.pdf
