When creating slices, they cannot snap to the guides, even though I have enabled snapping. Is it possible to automatically generate slices based on the guides?

Hi, I have an issue on my affinity Photo (Windows) In export persona, I create guides to snap slices easier on the guidelines but the magnetism doesn't work on the guidelines. (the "snap to guides" checkbox in the snapping manager is correctly checked) Anyone have a solution? Thanks

I am a bit stumped. I am trying to slice an image in sub images, that need exact slicing. So what I did, just like in Photoshop (which I want to ditch), is to create pixel perfect guides so that each item to be sliced has a guide on each side. I found out about the export persona, so I tried using that, but I can't get the slices to snap to the guides. It's just ignoring those. Am I missing something? I would expect this to be quite basic functionality? My use case: I have a rendered piano keyboard, and want to slice the keys so I get an image for each key.

I've done some more testing and instead of creating multiple artboards I just created 1 that contained the artwork, then in the export persona I created slices and exported them as PDFs, that worked BUT when creating slices they only work in pixels and not any other measurement That is no good for me, I need to work in a specific measurement. now I did try putting guides in the document at the spacing I needed but once in the export persona you can't snap to them. We are getting there though. It would be nice if we could create Slices in any measurement & be able to snap to guides. @DWright

That's not as precise as from layer, the issue with the blurring and wrong sized export may occur here. It would be best that either adjustments are applied or that manual creating slices are able to snap to the objects and/or guides.

I am having the same issue. I can't snap to guides. But I need these guides to create pixel perfect alignment/slicing. From what I see in Photo the guides snap to pixel grid, so I don't understand why it can't be changed to use in slices? I would imagine the guides would be reduced to their nearest integer, or only allowed for pixel aligned guides or so? I see that Pixelmator Pro does work with this, so I'll check that out. But have bought the whole Affinity suite and would love to see this supported.

One possibility is using a "master" artboard for all your objects, including the guides, and placing the blank "sub-artboards" in the background, nested into the master artboard: You may also have to set the artboard fill color to make it look the way you want. The drawback is that if you're using the Export persona, the individual "background" artboard slices will remain blank, so you may then have to recreate those slices on the "master" artboard. At least, any new slices will snap to the existing artboard slices, so it can be done pretty fast. On the other hand, however, the regular File>Export will include any objects placed above a background artboard. Another possibility is to create an artboard, set up the guides, and then duplicate the artboard with the already existing guides intact. I'm all for it. You may want to post a feature request.

Hi @MEB, even though I used the word 'icons', I'm not talking about the kind of graphics design icons that you are referring to. I'm editing textures for my game development environment and Affinity Photo remains the best tool for this use-case. I read earlier that the problem is that integer and float positions don't match, but I feel that any of these solutions would help a lot: Allowing the user to create grids and guides in integer space, so conversion is never a problem. Allowing slices to have floating point dimensions, and rounding them off upon export ("last moment"). Allowing the new slice to snap to floating point guides on creation but immediately convert them to integer positions ("earliest moment"). Allowing the slice to snap ONLY IF the floating position matches a proper integer position (within a specified error margin, for example). I understand that (2 and 3) is not preferred from a technical design standpoint, but would still be valid if the user is properly warned of possible rounding errors. I realize (4) also comes with its compromises. But looking at it from a user experience stand point, I feel it's simply very weird that you can create grids and guides, but cannot use them for slides.

Slices: Slices don't snap to grid, they dont snap to guides, can't duplicate slices, please take a look at Sketch Gradient tool: First of all it's sooo slow.. takes 2-3 seconds to open on my 2019 macbook pro. when it's open, i have no idea which part of the gradient is selected.. can we increase the size of the circle icon to signify the part of the gradient that i'm modifying? otherwise i have no idea... Hi @Maarten_ Creating a grid of artboards is quite simple/quick with Power Duplicate and as long as they are correctly pixel aligned (that is, use integers for its X,Y coordinates and width/height) Affinity Designer automatically creates a slice for each artboard and exports them without issues. Affinity Photo is not really the most adequate app for this task - you can't create artboards with it natively (although it supports them if they were created in other app of the suite) and was primarily designed for RAW development/photo editing. We are trying to keep each app as much focused on their fields/areas as possible. Regarding to slices and snapping, although technically possible it would cause other inconveniences/compromises: slices use integer positions only and as such cannot be snapped to arbitrarily/floating positions like other objects, guides and grids. If we do change the apps to support floating point positions then you would have to worry to snap slices to integer values/pixels as well which in the end may not worth the trouble. For icon design, Affinity Designer is really the best choice here. If you ever need/require some feature present on other app of the suite you can always send the document directly to that app going to menu File > Edit in... and selecting the app you want to send the document to.

Okay, I understand now. You didn't mention the slice tool in your first comment, and it sounded like you were talking about snapping guide lines to the grid. I guess we just hit a language barrier. Yes, you're right, slices don't snap to guides. Earlier in the thread, Meb confirmed that 'slices only snap to the Pixel grid'. I think everyone who has tried the slice tool would agree—you just expect this kind of basic snapping behaviour from such a tool. Affinity, in my experience, is not quick to respond to user feedback. As you can see, this was posted almost 6 years ago, and nothing has changed.

I can confirm. Snapping Manager does nothing, slices only snap to themselves and to spread & mid points. Looks like a bug to me. @MEB? A quick'n'dirty workaround: in Photo persona, create transparent (e.g. a "50% red overlay") vector rectangle shapes of the exact size of your slices switch to Export persona and "convert" those rectangle layers to slices in the Layers panel uncheck them so they don't export, you may want to name them something meaningful to keep track of them use them as your "guides" for your real slices: those will snap

Windows 10 Home 1809, Designer 1.7.0.209 NOTE: Please ignore the export issue in this post. I was put right on that but the grid/guides getting reset is still an issue. I have a document - attached - where, when I delete the "Backgrounds" layer, the grid is reset to the default and my export slices are deleted. Try: * loading the document; * looking at how the grid is set-up (11px); * going to the Export persona and looking at the export slices (should be 27, not all included in export); * then go back to the Vector persona and delete the "Backgrounds" layer. The grid has now gone back to the default and all of the manually-created export slices (named with "slice" and "Icon") have gone. What have I done wrong? Or, what bit of the functionality am I not aware of? Surely the grid and export slices can't be 'part of' a layer? That sounds wrong to me. The slices were created from the rectangles in "Backgrounds" but I don't think the slices should be deleted when I delete the rectangles as the rectangles were only created because the "Add Slice" function doesn't - in my experience - snap to the grid or guides so that was the only way I could create exact slice positions/sizes without a lot of manual work. Even if there's some odd thing about export slices that I don't know about, I really don't think the grid should be reset when I delete a layer. On a related note, when I have the original document and I set the "Backgrounds" layer to not be visible in export, items within it still show up in export, which is a bit weird. I've tried all kinds of ways to get the rectangles from showing up in the export - including setting them to invisible individually - but they just won't go away. I have attached an example of how artboards do not work for an instagram grid with objects that need to overlap the grid. because of this... 1 big artboard needs to be created and therefore... an instagram grid for 30 days requires me to draw 30 slices... painfully because slices can't be duplicated, don't snap to grid.. don't snap to guides.. etc.

AD version 1.7.3.481 Hi, I have to create slices from a weblayout to export jpgs. In this case i have picture frames with linked images in a Publisher document, which are exactly positioned/sized on integer pixel values. To export the images for web, i open the Publisher document in Designer and switch to export persona. My typical approach is to select the orginal object in the layers panel and create a new slice by pressing the "new slice (Slice erstellen)" button at the bottom of the layers panel. Example: the object is 480 x 480 px at position 0 / 1850 px. Normally when i create a slice from a selected object the slice directly takes the object/layer name and the EXACT dimensions and position of the original object. Even if i select multiple objects/layers and create all slices in a single shot. But in this case all created slices are some pixels bigger and shifted off. e.g. the created slice from this object is 482 x 482 px at position -1 / 1849 px I have some other big header images in this document at position 0 / 0 px with 1920 x 1080 px. These images produce slices with exact the original values as expected. So what's wrong? Is it because this is originaly a Publisher document, or is it about the picture frames? Unfortunately the slice tool does not snap to any grid or guides, so i have to manually correct all slices in the transform panel. Lot of workarounds and lost time - again... :-(

For me, dragging back to the right does work in both Designer & Photo, & it does not seem to matter in either one of them if 'Snap to Guides' is enabled in the Snapping Manager or not. But after watching the video @dutchshader posted carefully, I realized that it does work in the same way on Macs -- it is just necessary to deselect the current slice first to be able to drag out a new one from the corner of an existing one, & it does snap to the same width. (In the vid, I think that was done by clicking once somewhere not already in a slice.) For some stupid reason it never occurred to me to deselect the current slice first. Anyway, this simplifies creating the slices considerably -- it is only necessary to determine the appropriate slice width beforehand. Everything else is easy. EDIT: I just saw your last reply after posting mine. Good to know we both figured it out, if a bit slower than perhaps we should have. EDIT 2: I just realized that it isn't even necessary to to determine the appropriate slice width beforehand. Just snap the first slice to the full width & height of the image. Then, while it is still selected in the Transform panel add "/n" after the W value & press Return or Tab, where n is the desired number of slices. If this is done while any of the 3 left edge anchors are selected, it isn't even necessary to snap the slice to the left edge of the pano.

It's 2021, and as far as I can tell, slices still don't snap to guides. Also making guides is pretty difficult as well. Have I missed an upgrade? I'm on 1.9.

My apologies, you're correct R C-R as slices cannot be snapped to grids. I've found a previous internal bug report which states: 'Slices use integer space positions, and so cannot be snapped to float space positions, such as guides and grids.' Unfortunately this means that we cannot change this behaviour, and you will be unable to snap to a grid, regardless of snapping setting. I hope this clears things up!

Hi SurJones, Welcome to Affinity Forums :) Assuming you've set up your document to CMYK/8 and 300 dpi in Document Setup, you have now to create the slices using the Export Persona. Currently slices created manually don't snap to guides, so i suggest you create a vector shape for each slice which you can align using the guides you have created (make sure Snapping is turned on and Snap to Guides is checked in the Snapping Manager... (menu View ▸ Snapping Manager...), then use them to generate the slices automatically in the Export Persona. But for this to work the contents of each page must be grouped with the corresponding shape. The idea is to automatically generate a slice from the group using the shape there just to define slice's size, then hide the shape from the export in the Layers panel in the Export Persona and export the slices. I don't know how you have structured your document so this may not be most efficient solution, but the alternative - creating the slices manually - also require some work because you have to create the slices manually without the help of snapping (it doesn't work with slices).

New Point Transform Tool allows you to scale and rotate objects from any node. The Node Tool now contains a 'Transform Node' option which provides a containing box for the selected nodes and allows for more freeform editing of the nodes. New 'Cube' grid setup mode (take a look in 'View' -> 'Grid and Axis Manager...'). Pen tool now has a 'rubber band' mode and also a mode to allow future curves to be added to the current object's curves (for example, the character 'a' is constructed of two curves in a single 'curve object' and this mode makes that construction simpler). Node tool can now auto-snap nodes if you drag a node from one curve over the top of a node from another (selected) curve and pause, it will offer to snap to the same geometry as the node you're hovering over (ie, modify the on and off-curve nodes to match). Many tools now allow for 'Alignment widgets' which you can toggle the visibility of in the context toolbar. When enabled you can visually adjust the alignment or even, for example, 'align to centre, snapped to the left edge of this object' by simply click/dragging. Fill tool correctly allows editing of skewed fill handles and newly-created skewed fills draw much nicer now. Ruler origin can be edited by simply dragging the area where the rulers intersect each other - it can even be snapped onto objects in the document. Guides can be edited in most tools by simply dragging a guide in the ruler area. Grid setup is now more interactive: origin can be dragged, axis scale adjusted and angle adjusted on-document, complete with snapping to objects and angles in the document to help you reconstruct useful grids from finished artworks or sketches. By enabling 'Edit in Plane' on the new Isometric Panel, tools can edit objects and appear to make those edits along the currently active plane - extremely useful for artists who enjoy working with any axonometric projections. You can now drag the rotation centre point (when enabled on the context toolbar) while holding Ctrl and it will translate the object - this is actually very useful for positioning and snapping objects relative to others. Shapes tools now have presets so you can create your own favourite shape setups and more easily use them again. There are just far too many subtle tool changes to mention here, but hopefully you'll find the tools much improved General Arrowheads are now available in the Stroke Panel. I've created a project in Affinity Designer and I'm in the process of attempting to export my graphic elements but I'm finding the slice tool refuses to snap to anything other than the middle of the artboard. Is there a way to enable slice snapping to objects or guides at least? Unfortunately creating slices with the objects selected doesn't work for me either because the slice tool for some reason thinks I want to include the parts I masked off :wacko: I'm really stuck here at the moment, so any help would be appreciated.

Hi StefaneG, Welcome to Affinity Forums :) 1) Only slices created automatically by the Export Persona follow the changes made to the objects/layers that originated them. Slices created manually don't do this. To create an "automated" slice from an object/layer go to the Export Persona, Layers panel, select the object/layer you want and press Create Slice button on the bottom. 2) Select the object, change to the Node Tool, enable Snap to selected curves on the context toolbar, Snap section, then drag the node downwards. Smart guides and colour coded nodes will appear to help you align it with the other nodes. 3) Currently it's not possible to copy/paste text styles. This will be improved later. 4) Currently it's not possible to delete a segment directly. You must break the nodes that surround the segment and then delete it. To break a node, select it with the Node Tool and press Break Curve from the Action section in the context toolbar. Then select the segment and press delete. A Knife tool is already on our roadmap to be implemented as Hokusai pointed out. 5) An offset/countour tool is also on our plans although not listed on the roadmap yet. Meanwhile you can give a large stroke width to an object, then expand it going to menu Layer ▸ Expand Stroke, and then Layer ▸ Geometry ▸ Divide to create two shapes from the expanded stroke (one for each line) if the original shape you started with was closed.

It would be really nice if I could duplicate slices simply by Option-Dragging on the slice-rectangle. Doing it manually for 20 slices on my document is tedious. Instead I can duplicate and then snap them using guides.
