Editing PDFs - save or export?

Recommended Posts

Hello there

Think this is a very basic question but we’ve got in a right muddle over here with duplicate documents.

When you open a PDF document in affinity and press ‘Save’ does it overwrite the existing PDF or create a new affinity document?

What should the workflow be?

any help much appreciated thank you!

When you press save a new Affinity document is created. What would you like to have your workflow to be? If you want to have a PDF, you have to export. Just my workflow: I open the PDF, work on the layout and export as PDF, but I do not overwrite the original PDF. Editing a PDF in Affinity is good, but not perfect, so I like to keep the original backuped somewhere.

It's quite clear from the behavior if you try it. Open a PDF, click File > Save. You get a Save dialog that wants you to save a .afphoto file.

You can Save over a JPEG, TIF, or PNG file (depending on whether there are layers). Or over a PSD file if you've set your Preferences to allow it. Or a .afphoto/.afdesign/.afpub.

But not over a PDF.
