Q1 How do I merge down? Is it just dragging which embeds the layer in another layer or is it possible to actually merge layers?

Q2 Why do I get a new layer each time I paint in pixel persona?

Sorry to ask such newb questions but as an Illustrator and Photoshop user for 30 years, old habits die hard!

1. To merge down select that option in the layers tab.

2. Sorry, I don't know.

Some scientists claim that hydrogen, because it is so plentiful, is the basic building block of the universe. I dispute that. I say there is more stupidity than hydrogen, and that is the basic building block of the universe.

These are not my own words but I sure like this quote.

You aren't in Pixel persona, you are in Designer Persona and you are using the vector brush.

If you are using Affinity Designer you cannot merge down.

Ca you do me a screenshot of where that option is please. Thanks

First we need to clarify which affinity product you're using?

The Designer icon in @Chezqui’s screenshot answers that question:

Yes...for those who use Designer, but as I do not I wasn't sure.

In that case I am of no help.

Q1 I don’t know if this will help you sort out your multiple pixel layers, but in AD there’s a ‘Merge Curves’ option on the Geometry submenu of the Layers menu:

Q2 If the currently selected layer is a pixel layer, further painting should go on the same layer. Without seeing your project file I’ve no idea why it’s working differently for you.

A2  Magic! that is the answer. I wasn't on a pixel layer. Thank you.

Thanks for the feedback! In your original post you wrote

and I took “each time” to mean even if you were already on a pixel layer, which is why I said I’d no idea why further painting wasn’t going on the same layer.
