"Brakes" on shadows

Hi everybody !

I don't think it's really a bug, but I'm facing a problem with Designer, Publisher and Photo and there is no "free speech graphic design related category".

When I want to place shadows, they adapt in terms of opacity according to the content of the above layer.
I have tried different methods, like generating the shadow with a black layer underneath and a blur effect, or by changing the fusion mode.

Is there a way which allows the shadows to have the same intensity, no matter the contents of the above layer?
I put a screenshot of the problem.

I don't think that is what is happening

I think it is the way our eyes see the shadow when applied to two different colours

Can you upload the sample Affinity document design you used to create your screenshot above

So we can verify exactly what is happening

Hi Carl,

I can't upload whole document because it's professional work but I'm sending you an example document.

I don't think that this is an interpretation of the brain because it's visible even by zooming or by masking "the content". This is not the only document that is problematic on that side.

I've added 2 white rectangles onto your design

The shadows now appear to be uniform.

Also (without the white rectangles) if I colour sample the areas where the shadows appear not to be the same, I get the same colour values

It's possible my brain is just broken but see what you think

I don't think your brain is broken 

I just did a test on ebodA pohsotohP (I had not thought about it), same result.

So there are two possibilities ...
Either it's an interpretation of our brain
Either that's the way the shadows work

This is definitely a trick of the eyes. I came across this great image that demonstrates this very well. Colour pick both A and B - they're both 120, 120, 120 yet the eye perceive them as being widely different due to the surrounding colour.

Ah, yes! The famous “Adelson's checker shadow illusion”.

Here’s another example. The luminance of all the grey rectangles is the same.
