Color Pick From Outside of AP?

Recommended Posts

The color picker (eye dropper) that is part of the Color panel in the studio will sample from anywhere on the screen. Just drag it where you want it to sample, and release it. The sampled color will fill the well next to the eye dropper, and you can click on that well to assign the color.

The Colour Picker Tool will not sample colour outside the program but the Colour Picker in the Colour Panel will (including on a second screen)

The Color Picker Tool WILL sample color outside the Affinity Photo Window.

Select the Color Picker Tool by clicking on the Tool Bar or press the shortcut key I.

Click in the active editing window and drag the cross hair anywhere on any monitor to sample the color.

The picker in the Color panel works similarly in that it can be dragged to the place you want to sample on any part of any monitor whether inside the Affinity Photo window or not.

I learned this just the other day from "Ten Top Tips for Affinity Photo Volume 2" by Scott Williams Photography beginning at 15:45 into the video at

Hi, I cannot pick a color from another window. Using the color picker from the color window I can select colors from outside the app but it only select the colors from my desktop, even though I have another window open. When I try to select the color from another app it seems to select the color of my desktop underneath. Any ideas?

If you're on a Mac, perhaps you need to give the application permission to record the screen. It's one of the system Security settings. I would have expected a prompt from macOS, but perhaps it prompted previously and you denied the permission.
