Anon
Hello: I previously posted a bug report about how version 1.7.1 is very slow and sluggish after selecting a large number of objects with the Move Tool (see pasted post below). So slow in fact, that it was almost not usable when needing to manipulate thousands of objects. In contrast, version 1.6.1 was remarkably fast and responsive. Unfortunately, version 1.7.2 is even worse. For comparison, when selecting 5700 objects, version 1.6.1 takes 4 seconds. Version 1.7.1 takes 22 seconds, and version 1.7.2 takes about 26 seconds. For about 20,000 objects, version 1.6.1 still takes 4 seconds, version 1.7.1 takes over 100 seconds, and version 1.7.2 takes 4 minutes! See pasted post below for Mac specs. I have attached screen clips of all versions to illustrate using the test file of 5700 objects. I have also included the 5700 and 20,000 object test files. I hope this issue can be resolved. Thanks a lot. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hello: Since upgrading to version 1.7.1 from version 1.6.1, Affinity Designer is now very slow at selecting a large number of objects with the Move Tool. AD is now so slow at this (it can take minutes) that I can no longer work with many of my files. With version 1.6.1, I could select thousands of objects and it took only a few seconds at most before I could edit/move. I have attached screen recordings that compares version 1.6.1 to 1.7.1 at selecting about 5700 objects from a test file (also attached) using the Move Tool. In version 1.6.1, it takes about 4 seconds to select all 5700 objects. This can be seen starting from when the Move Tools is dragged from the upper left to the bottom right until all objects are selected and ready to move/edit (time stamp 0:15 to 0:19). In version 1.7.1, the same task takes about 22 seconds (time stamp 0:17 to 0:39). Although not shown, version 1.6.1 also takes about 3-4 seconds to select 20,000 objects. In contrast, going up to 20,000 objects now takes version 1.7.1 over 100 seconds. I have a late 2014 Retina 5K 27-inch iMac running MacOS Majave 10.14.5 with 32 GB RAM and AMD Radeon R9 M290X 2 GB graphics card. I have tried disabling Metal compute acceleration but this does not help. The same problem exists on my 2017 MacBook Pro. Thanks a lot for the help in trying to solve this issue. Staff Sean P Posted September 2, 2019 Staff Share Posted September 2, 2019 Hi Anon, Thanks for the update. The issue is still logged and open with development so they are looking into it. However there is no need to create a new report about this issue for each version. If it is still an issue please just bump your previous thread and update us using that, as that will be the one linked with development! Anon
Sean P, Got it. Thanks for the prompt reply and having development look into it. Much appreciated.
Anon
Hi Sean/Moderators, I just tested out version 1.7.3 and it looks like the lag/slowness in selecting a large number of objects is still a problem for me. For the 20k objects test file (see previous post referencing version 1.7.2 and its attachments), it takes about 2 minutes to select 20,000 objects. Again, version 1.6.1 took only 4 seconds! Unfortunately, I work with a lot of files that have a large number of objects and am finding it very difficult to use any version of Designer greater than 1.6.1. I originally switched from Adobe Illustrator to Affinity Designer because working with a large number of objects in Illustrator was so slow as to not be usable. Thus, the speed of Designer version 1.6.X (and prior versions) was a godsend. Any chance you guys can fix this issue to return Designer back to its zippy feel and usability for files with a large number of objects? Thanks a lot! Staff Sean P Posted December 9, 2019 Staff Share Posted December 9, 2019 Hi Anon, Development have marked this as fixed in 1.8. When we go to beta with 1.8 it will be placed on the forum below, so feel free to try it in that build. If it is still an issue in 1.8 give this thread a bump and I will speak to development. https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/forum/73-designer-bugs-found-on-macos/ Oval

Anon
Hi Sean and others, Just wanted to give an update. Finally had a chance to try AF beta 1.8.0.2 on the previously posted files with a large number of objects (approx. 20k). In contrast to version 1.7.X that took over 2 minutes to select 20K objects, AF is back to the same zippy feel and responsiveness as experienced in version 1.6.1. In fact, beta 1.8.0.2 is significantly faster than 1.6.1. Thanks a lot for addressing this!
