Convert Shape Group to Path

Recommended Posts

Hey there!

Recently bought AD and been having a blast, currently working on another landscape piece.

This may be a stupid question but I want to convert a group of circles into an editable path, how would I go about this?
All I want is the visible outline to be editable.

Here's the image in question.

Thanks in advance, loving the program. I might post my already finished vectors.

It seems your circles are already converted via "Expand Stroke" before you squeezed them into ellipses.

Then just select all and call Boolean add:

That option isn't showing up for me. They are greyed out and aren't selectable.

I wonder why the contour is lighter on south+north then east+west so to speak.

Expand Stroke works on donuts as well. Are we talking about Affinity Designer?

Yes, hence the AD I posted in the OP. I should have been more clear, one moment.

It works as described. Make your donuts and call for expand stroke. It works as well with first to convert donuts to curves - then expand stroke - then Boolean add. No big deal:

(snip)

Okay, that's not what I'm looking for. Maybe I wasn't clear, (which happens a lot, I'm not good at describing problems) but I need the outside of the shape to be converted into a path. Think of all these circles as one big cloud. I want to do this:

Couldn´t be easier than with just plain circles and Boolean add:

Okay, I get that but when your mouse disappears I have no idea what you are doing. Would be nice if you explained that. I understand the add key. Now, how the heck do I delete the excess inside the shape and actually convert it to a path in the first place? Starting to get confused and frustrated.

The excess will vanish automatically when you Boolean add all the overlapping circles. Look at the layers panel. I then just add a stroke and deleted the fill to make it look like your example. Nothing special really. Did you have any experience with vector editors? This is just basic stuff and not rocket science. :D
