Problems with Garamond font

Recommended Posts

Can anyone help me? Capitals in Affinity Publisher using Garamond (copy pasted from Microsoft word) are weirdly bold. See attached example. I don't want to buy a font if I don't need to or I'm doing something daft that can be fixed. I do want to use Garamond, although if the only fix is 'choose another font' I guess I will have to.

Hi Stella HB and Welcome to the Forums,

Could you attach the .afpub file for this?

Also what happens if you try to import the text directly into Publisher and not via copy and paste?  To do this, click in a text box and then click File>Place and you'll be able to insert a docx file.

Looks fine in my version of Publisher.  Try pasting it without formatting, Edit>Paste Without Format and see if it appears any better.

I've attached a screenshot of how it appears on my Windows PC and it also shows the same on my Mac as well.

Um...it looks pretty heavy on the capital I glyphs to me? It's a poetry pamphlet, so I'm being VERY penickity about it...

Here's a screen shot of the same poem after I changed all the capital I glyphs to small caps of a different size. Actually, I'm not convinced it's any better!

The capitals in general - I used the Garamond installed on my system - appear to be are a bit wider. See third line where you can compare I and L. So I think the font is to "blame".

Any suggestions for something comparable?

Take a look at Cormorant Garamond:

@Stella HB  Just a small suggestion.  “buried” not “berried.”  It is the old editorial publisher in me.

Thanks Alfred, from a quick view it looks like it has the same issue as the Garamond I'm using...

I think that’s just the way the font is meant to look, Stella! So what do you mean by “something comparable”?

Without having your original font I would doubt, that the capital I is really (professional) printed bold. Maybe it appears only to be bold when rendered to the display? As an alternative take Courier as the font. ;)

Or, but that was never the intention of the maker of the font, change the horizontal scale of the I to 85%. But this is just an ugly hack.

Yes, that's a great point Joachim - I will get in touch with my printer when she gets back from holiday (rude! How dare she go on holiday when I need her?!) and see what it looks like when printed. Will keep the horizontal ugly hack plan in my back pocket just in case .

Thanks so much everyone.

I think the font displays better in publisher than word, word is on the right.

Re "berried" just add "Rowan" before tree ;) they are giving a great display of red berries at the moment.

That’s what I thought “berried” meant when I first read it!

'rowan berried in the lonely earth.' You guys... :)

Editorial solution.  If Molly means “interred” then she should have the option to spell berried correctly, as she may possibly be unamused when she is 20 or 21 and reading her first published poem. On the other hand, if she means “berried” as in @Alfred‘s and @firstdefence‘s rowan tree, then she should be printed as composed because she is undoubtedly a budding philosopher.   Personally, I vote for interred, as in “squished into cold hard ground.”  :35_thinking:

That’s an earlier stage, presumably, than a berried philosopher! :P
