Replacing images: Preference vs. current type of placement

Recommended Posts

When your document preference for images is Prefer Linked and you replace an embedded image in your document. Which type of placement should be used here? Linked? Embedded? Personally I prefer the preference-method over the keep-it-as-is-method. In fact the image remains embedded although the preference is linked.

More or less an academic question, because both sides could be right. ;)

Apparently there was a serious reason to change the default/predefined behavior, so why change him when exchanging pictures. For me, clearly leave embedded.

This is the point. Since I like linked more over embedded I changed the preference to linked. So I would expect to respect this, when I replace an image in an opened PDF where all cointained images are embedded.

Apart from this: I wonder if it would be useful to have an option for extracting the embedded images, saving them into a standard folder and having them linked. A collection of loose images would be easy to work on. PDFlib used in Affinity products seems to be able to do this.

Bulk link change is a task for Resource Manager rather than "changing" the link type when replacing individual images.

The issue really is about use of language. "Prefer Linked" infers that the preference for new images would be to link unless otherwise specified. Consequently, I would expected images that were already embedded in a document to continue to be embedded and, if I were to update the file, to continue to work with any embedded images as embedded unless I manually changed that.

I have to ask the question why would you change the default preference midstream? It's the sort of thing you would make a note of doing before beginning a project, surely?

I'd also question the value of "extracting" embedded images from a file. It all sounds like poor preparation and planning before creating a project. Which leads onto how do users start projects? Just running around with no file organisation could be a recipe for creating problems. Personally, I write a set of project notes before starting so I know what I need to do and what is required. I create a project folder and copy any documents or images into it. I use "Prefer Linked" by default and as all my files are in one place there's no problem. Any adjustments I need to make to images are normally specific to my needs for the project so I'm happy for the original image to be elsewhere and left untouched.

I assume it is an imported (not own) PDF document.

Why would @Joachim_L "work" on a PDF, and not on native *.afpub?
